slip clutch

I decided to finally give my 1401d and new Muratori tiller a workout. I carefully scoured the field and removed all rocks of any size worth mentioning. Happily tilling along, I dis-covered a huge rock which had cleverly hidden itself just inches below the surface. Needless to say, it stopped the tiller--and my new 1401d cold!
Is a slip clutch--and more careful rock picking--the remedy?
If so, do they come in a standard size? Do any of you dealers have recommendations--or cn you sell me one?

I need a little advise in this area also. I plan to till and brush mow with my new 1602D. I do have an over-run clutch that just slips over the tractors PTO. This will only keep the mower from "pushing" the tractor when I try to stop. Is there a difference between this type of over-run clutch and a slip clutch? I have never seen a slip clutch for sale in my local farm stores but I would assume that it would protect the tractor PTO and engine from damage, I have LOTS of rock. In fact I live in Rockville Township! We still have lots of snow so I wil not get in the field for a few weeks. Thanks in advance for any advise. l

Usually there is a shear bolt which attaches the PTO shaft to the implement. It may be that your 1401D isn't strong enough to break the bolt. What to do about that is a puzzler. Check to see if it is a grade 2 bolt. After that we need some engineering help.

A slip clutch is a spring loaded friction device. It is mounted at the implement end of the PTO shaft. You can adjust the amount of friction by tightening the bolts that hold the springs. The proberly adjusted slip clutch lets the PTO keep turning when the implement suddenly stops. They sell them at Agri Supply (1-800-345-0169) for $56.95. You have to keep them adjusted as they rust up over the winter and then they don't slip.

I've also seen people use aluminum bolts in areas where you need extra isolation from pto faults... the aluminum shears off fairly easilly, but yet has decent starting torque.
