slip ring not releasing locking balls on pto shaft

Bought a new 3pt post hole digger for my Kubota B2710. The tractor end of the pto shaft slips easily over the pto stub on the tractor, but the locking balls don't release when I pull the spring loaded ring forward (toward the tractor). The ring moves smoothly and it moves about 3/4" so it appears to be working properly. I put the shaft on my bench and tried to depress the balls with the ring pulled forward, but none of them will depress, although all 3 seem to spin freely. Am I missing something? Is it necessary to really whack the shaft hard to get the balls to depress? The only thing I've ever had on the back of a tractor is a backhoe, so the 3pt thing is all new to me.

You have to pull back on the ring (toward the shaft) to release the balls, and push forward on the ring (away from the shaft) to lock the balls. That being said, 3/4 of an inch or so sounds about right for the travel. If the shaft has been sitting around for a while unused, you may just have a little corrosion built up. I had this happen to one of mine years ago. I just sprayed it real good with some penetrating oil and kept working it until things seemed to be freed up. Then I rubbed a generous amount of grease inside the ring to try to coat the balls and the inner workings. Hopefully this'll work for you too. It would be a lot simpler if there was a standard way these things were made, but that's not how it is.
The slip ring on my tiller has to be turned clockwise to release the locking balls. Pushing or pulling has no effect.
My bushhog has a pin that is pushed in for release.
Good luck, and try to keep it oiled.

I have the same setup, I had one refuse to release and ended up prying the plastic grip ring off and actuating it manualy. When they work they work pretty good when they don't it sure is a pain..... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Thanks for the input. I'm going to talk with the company today and see what they say. Since I just took it out of the box I'm not going to spend any time trying to fix it, I'll just ask for a replacement part. Will post results.

Probably easier to just see if it works different. Try twisting clockwise/counter cw.. or push pull on it.. etc.

My eurocardan is o fthe twist variety.. whereas my old ford was a pul back variety..

If yours has two rings, one plastic and one metal, you probably have to pull the metal ring away from the tractor. This is such a common mistake, one I made also, that I posted some pics in a thread a while back. I can't find the thread, but I did find the picture.

You are exactly right, that was the problem. When I pulled the metal ring away from the tractor it works fine. When I called the company, the guy on the phone answered my question before I even finished asking it. He says they get that one a lot. I didn't point out a picture in the manual would help. They should use your picture.
