YM 276
I have Yanmar YM2500, 1100 hrs, runs great, starts in 18 deg weather, however, uses 1 qt oil in 8-10 hrs and smokes, blueish gray, in particular under heavy load. I pulled head, had it checked, replaced gasket, replaced all valve stem seals, all else looks OK. The oil change periods may have been neglected by prev owner. I have used Rotella, Delo 400, Mobil 1 synthetic,(all multi grade 15w-40) I even added a qt of Marvel Mystery oil and ran it for a while, then changed again. still uses oil, still smokes. At first, it slobbered fine spray of oil out exh, got all over the hood, etc. Now, after using tractor hard for about 10 hrs, slobbering quit and exh pipe looks normal for diesel. still uses oil. It was 18 deg this morning, so I tried to start tractor. fired up on second try. With this kind of compression, I just hate to tear into it for new rings and bearings. Don't know what to try next. oh yes, tractor never runs hot. 180-190 deg on hot day in Georgia summer.

Any suggestions?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there ain't no short cuts. Sounds like oil rings are worn out. You've already had the head off and reworked, go ahead and replace rings and have a good motor.

Had a YM1700 that had the wrong air filter and pretty much did the same thing as your YM2500. Smoked blue under load and used oil. With new rings it ran stronger and did not use oil.

I had a thread here showing the difference in the old and new rings.

I agree with the other 2 suggestions.Possibly Stuck / broken oil ring

thanks to all you guys. I had suspected problem with oil rings, so guess I will have to just tear it down and re ring the little rascal. bearings, too while I am at it.
