I've taken on the task of installing an old Ford 3PH BH, badly needing re-storing. Many of the pins have a lot of play. You can push the boom and the pins allow it to swing several inches.

Can the pins be removed and the holes be "reamed" one size larger? If so, is this something that can be done on site? By me with what new tool?

If it were me, I would take the boom apart and have it linebored for the next size larger, or put new bushings in it. Having operated this kind of wore out equipment is frustrating and hard on the rest of the machine.

I'd have it bored for bushings, and install new pins.

Thanks guys. Where can I get this done, type of biz?

Is there some tool I could buy and do it myself? Maybe grinding like honing cyclinder walls. If I could do it by grinding, I maybe be able to back it under a tree and hoist it apart. Could save a lot of dissasembly.

ind a local machine shop, the will be able to help you. The cost of a machine to do it yourself is more than having someone else do the job for you. Good luck.

I would take it to machine shop. You could ream it out with a slow turning drill and a hand full of reamers and then make new bushings on a lathe. But as northwoodpower says this could get real expensive in a hurry. There may be a trade school near you that students could do it for you. This is not a big job for a machine shop but machine work is high. I would take it to a small shop as their rates are usually lower due to lower overhead. When I retire I plan to run a part time machine shop to do just this sort of repairs and pay for my toys. big dan

There are mobile services that can line bore and make bushings as well if you can't cart the machine somewhere..

There are numerous places in Bloomington that you could get it done at. I had work done at a place on south walnut and wasn't too impressed with them. These guys were a fairly small shop. I need a hole drilled in hardened steel. They got the hole drilled but it was not in the right place. It works but not the way it should.

Another option is a product called EXPANDER - Svenska Expander AB. If you check the web site they should be able to put you in touch with a local dealer - it is a slick product, but probably just as expensive as line boring and re-bushing your joints - which is also a good option if you find someone who knows what they are doing
