Hi guys.....I placed an ad in the local CL asking if anyone had any older haying equipment lying around. A gentlemen contacted me and sent a few pics of what I think is a New Holland 56. Can someone please identify it? He is asking $500 as a starting point stating it needs tires. I laughed and mentioned that some had naturally painted it rustic brown. I only have 2 acres to bale and I'm not sure if this rake is bigger than I need or this a standard size? The rake is also an hour or so away and I have not seen it in person. I sell and repair warehouse equipment so the mechanics do not worry me. I just don't know the value of equipment like this. Can anyone point me in the right direction?.
Thx Chad

Check the gear box... If ok ... For $500 buy it ..

I use a 256 which is similar (Even same rustic brown) to it on 10 acres.

Thx for the reply! How would I check it? I guess pull it few feet and if it spins make a few assumptions about it?? I would think the box could be rebuilt but are parts available?? And how do you transport these? Car trailer?? It's really too far to pull home, especially since he says the tires are shot. I'm sure it's been sitting for some time

I bought this JD 350 side delivery rake a few years ago for $800. 10 ft wide, 3pt hitch type, pto driven.

Used by 5x10 ft landscape trailer to get it home. Seller had a fork lift so it was easy to load. I unloaded it with my Mahindra 5525 with the FEL and clamp on forks.

$500 is a lot for that beater. I wouldn't pay more than $300. Figure you'll have to completely refurbish it and possibly replace some or all of the tines.

Good luck.

I think I should at least go check it out to see what it is. I didn't think to ask before but, is there any reason I should be looking at a wheel rake instead of this style (whatever these are called)? Is one easier or more convenient than the other??

5-bar side delivery rake.
Wheel rake: they work fine. Just have to adjust the height correctly so you don't mix a lot of dirt and rocks into the windrow.

Good luck
