There is a small reservoir above the inlet manifold that i gather has something to do with the thermostart? does this get filled with diesel and is heated prior to being drawn in for cold starts? i have only just bought this machine and was wondering if that is what it is.as it is dry i dont think it has been used for some time but it smells like it has had diesel in it.also there is a fitting that has a wire attached that must be the heating unit,i have yet to get a meter on that stud to see if it has 12v on it when the key is turned to the left.as for the rest of it, it appears to run OK and does exactly what i asked of it,i ran it pretty hard shifting dirt, mulch and other things on our boggy block(the diff lock got a workout) for 4 hours straight and ran well.speaking of the lock if i make a lever lock for it to keep it on whilst i am on soft dirt is it going to damage or break it?? i dont know how strong the diff centres or locks are hence asking the question.as for fuel consumption it looks to have used about 1 to 1.5 litres for that 4 hour stint so can't complain about that either.

Simple test for the Thermostart module: turn the key left for 10 seconds, then feel if the Thermostart is warm to the touch. Diesel goes in the reservoir.

You don't need to use it until the weather turns cold.

I have used the thermostart on my 1500D maybe once, and that was some time back. Unlike most Yanmars, the thermostart switch for mine separate from the key switch. As I recall, it is on the left side of the dash.

Some day I will find the time to check it out. The first time I needed it I wasn't sure it would work and I wasn't sure my battery would hold up long enough to find out, anyway. I used a propane torch to heat the intake air when I started it.

The diff lock should only be used when one tire has lost traction and spins. Even if your on dirt you should avoid making turns while the diff is locked. You can also use the split brakes to help with getting unstuck, just hold the brake for the tire that spins.
