Boy I got alot of reaction on my last post thank you to all for your responses. Maybe I should be a little more specific about my plans. I want to be able to put up 500 small 4x4 rolls of hay per year. I currently sqaure bale. I am shopping Kioti and Mahindra around 45 engine horsepower. Both have over 35 pto hp and weigh upwards of 3800lbs. I geuss that really puts them out of the compact category. The one I choose will definately be 4x4 and have a loader. I was thinking DK 45 and Mahindra 5500. Are either of these going to be heavy and strong enough to use for rolling hay? I don't want to wear my tractor out in a short time and don't want one too small or too big. So, tell me what you think! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I think you're too small. Sure you could probably do it but I hope your land is completely flat. Most of the round balers you need at least a minimum of 40 some PTO hp. As far as wearing your tractor out early sure that is going to happen if you have too much load for the job. If you're buying now why not spend a couple thousand more and jump into the 50 and 60 hp tractors and have something where it isn't a question of having enough hp or safety?

Joel, I've never baled any 4 x 4 bales; mostly 5 x 5 with some 5 x 6, using an 85hp tractor and you could definitely feel the baler rock the tractor at times. And while I never had any problem with enough power, you could sure hear and feel it when the governor kicked in going up any little rise.

So while I don't know for sure, I think you can do what you want with the tractors you have in mind, but I doubt that you're gonna like doing it.

In other words, I agree with Cowboydoc; you'll be a lot happier if you get a bigger tractor to start with.

You are looking to do a lot of hay with the bare minumum lowest tractor size. Can be done, but I would want bigger.

Just a note, the way this forum is set up, probably be easier for us all if you keep this topic in the same message chain, not start a new one every day. No big deal & I could be wrong, just gently mentioning my personal preference. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
