How much do they cost? I thought the Bear Cats were all over $3000. Do you have a model number?

I have the 70554 and run it off my JD 870. I think it was about $2500 when I purchased it in 02. At the time, Oregon had a 50% "clean air" tax credit for chippers! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

You can get a new 6" Jinma brand chipper for 1500.00 any day of the week. They are self feed up to six inch and get rave reviews from everyone ... Scozz

I can't remember when something stuck me as so funny as this did. I sat here laughing for at least 45 seconds, thought about it again and started laughing all over again. I got the frustration you must have felt and that made it funnier. You ask about a smaller, cheaper chipper, and get Jinma's huge beast and others that are more expensive than the one you mentioned! Come on guys, read the original post! John

That Mighty Mac at Northern looks a lot like the 11hp Troybuilt Tomahawk I used to have except it is PTO driven. I got the Troybuilt before I had a PTO tractor. It would certainly chip branches up to about 3" diameter and the shredder worked OK too BUT the branches had to be straight and most if not all of the smaller side branches needed to be sawed off to allow them to fit in the small chipper opening. If you have only a relatively small pile of branches or brush sprouts that you're trying to chip then it will probably work out just fine for you. However, I got frustrated whenever I would take down some trees and end up doing 2 or 3 times the chain saw work to get the pieces small enough to fit into the chipper so I ended up selling it and going back to living with brush piles and burning when I can. For my needs I'm going to take a look at one of these Jinma chippers.

If you are handy you can pick up a chipper like this in your local classified ads for $200 to 300. Looking at the pic on the Northern site it looks like it wouldn't be all that hard to convert it to PTO drive. Or heck just use it with the small gas engine and save yourself $1000 and the hassle of converting it to PTO drive.

BTW I have to agree with Orb. What the Northern pic shows going into that chipper I just run over with my brush hog /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good luck
John
