Smoke in valve cover, lots of blue in exhaust??

Did your buddy use ether? Some (cough - pejorative - cough) people feel that all diesels need ether to start and they spray it like there is no tomorrow. Not saying he did, just that is the 1.253 second method to turn a good engine into a blue smoker.

Yep. That, or overheated it. If it were mine, I'd pull the head and look at the cylinder walls first...
