I know there has been a lot of discussion of snakes lately, and I'll admit to being a guy who doesn't like snakes. I wasn't happy to find this guy in the house- quite small but a mean little guy- striking and hissing until I got him into a box and outside. Not sure how he got inside. Can anyone tell me what type of snake this is? Please tell me it's harmless and will eat some of the voles in the lawn where we released him.

Hard to tell in looking at the head straight on, or what you have up there in the NW, but around here in MO, he looks a lot like the Bullsnakes we have. They are constrictors that feed on mice & such, and can be quite defensive [hissing, tail thumping, etc.} when frightened.

Around here, we only worry about rattlers, copperhards and cottonmouths. Compared to the non-venomous variety, they are easy to identify in that they all have a triangular-shaped head and "slit" pupils, like a cat. If I run across a snake without those characteristics, I leave him alone. In fact, to be honest, I leave the copperheads alone, as well, since they posess a very low key demeanor, rarely strike humans with venom, and do a great job on rodents and such. I'm a little more wary of the rattlers, and will kill cottonmouths on sight, since they can get somewhat aggressive in defense of what they consider their territory.

In any event, I think it's safe to say he's a "good neighbor," and you've aided yourself more in relocating him back outside than by simply dispatching him.

He looks like a lost snake to me. Unless you keep mice in your house. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The pattern resembles a corn snake, but I have never been real good at IDing snakes... I tend to agree with leaving them(any snake) alone(but wouldnt leave it to run free in the house either) since the do help control rodents and rarely pose a problem to humans..

Don't know, but it really is pretty. Your good deed for the day!

Thanks for the replies- I did an image search on google- and while all snakes look like rattlesnakes to me (and we do have some around)- the markings look consistent with a gopher snake. I'm just glad it's out of the house.

I think you got it. Looks like a gopher snake (closely related to the bull snake mentioned above).

I'm glad to hear you allowed him to eat more varmits. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

My Granma once came across a small corn snake in her under-the-sink cabinet and proceeded to grab Grandpa's hammer so she could throw a couple of 16d nails in the cabinet doors. Then, justified herself by admitting that "I only use it for odds-and-ends storage." /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
