Heehaw, Doc, SHF,

Well, I guess that settles that. I figure if it isn't going to eat me, we (me & the snake) can learn how to avoid each other.

BTW - Here's a nice site to get more information about snakes. Says that the rattlesnake should be considered "armed and dangerous" /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif, but a copperhead is merely considered a "dangerous pest"; it's bite is rarely fatal.

Just curious, Bill --

If you had little kids running around your property, would you be quite as lenient with the rattlers?

Re: Snakes are out \"must be Spring\"

In general it seems to me that we ought to leave snakes alone, but I have to say that the year long battle to get the black snake who lived in our kitchen ceiling to move outdoors darn near wore out my patience.

Re: Snakes are out \"must be Spring\"

I like your philosophy. I generally don't kill anything and only did so this time because it seemed obvious that we were going to continue to lose eggs (and maybe chickens) as long as our Texas rat snake was around. I'm afraid I've inherited my mother's fear of snakes; she would freak out over a foot-long garter snake. In retrospect, I'm sorry I killed the thing; I should have given more thought to relocating it.

Harv (not Harvey),

re: If you had little kids running around your property, would you be quite as lenient with the rattlers?

That's a darn good question, and one that I hadn't considered. However, after thinking about it a bit, I'd have to say I'd do minimum of alteration to the basic plan. Our nearby-neighbors are in various stages of child rearing (one just sent their youngest to college this year, second has one teenager, another in college, third has two grade-schoolers). All of us have the same basic philosophy regarding the snakes: Dont kill, move if too close. Now obviously, the two house-holds with the grown kids must have figured out a way to make this work, or the problem is not as big as we imagine.

In fact, the second household mentioned above, both parents are teachers; one is a science teacher. He is the one that would make rattler-discovery into a little science project. They would get the snare, run out & grab the snake, put it in a burlap sack, then stick it in the freezer for a little while (not long enough to kill it, just long enough to slow it down a lot).
They would then take it out to a place away from the house & turn it loose & film it along the way. Great education oportunity.

So, after thinking, I'd say yes, but I would be less inclined to leave them alone entirely. I would be more inclined to re-locate them away from the house. I would also take the opportunity to educate the kids at the earliest opportunity.

Chris, must be just you and I in the fair land of OZ I reckon !

Yep it's snake season here in Central Queensland. Haven't seen any in the yard since I killed 2 small browns last summer.

Have seen at least 3 on the roads around here and the neighbour has seen one in his yard.

So it's only a matter of time before I see one close up.

Yuk !

Re: Snakes are out \"must be Spring\"

I've lived in Vermont since '65, and have been told since I moved here that there are no poisonous snakes native to Vt, although I've heard of a few reports over the last 3-4 years that some rattlesnakes have been found in the mountains along the Vt / NH border. I have a few garter snakes around my place. This summer I was gathering some blackberries in back of my house. I reached into a bush to pick a couple of berries, and a snake crawled across my hand. That snake took a permanent dirt nap, and then I went back in the house to clean myself up... Man, that thing scared the heck out of me!
