We are invaded by SNAKES! Just tonight my wife saw 3 in the tank while she was fishing - they scared her off. Then when I let Fudge (the dog) in, I found another on the porch. When I tried to take his picture he slithered UNDER the porch (deck) where we can't see him.

I have grandchildren and am afraid of these snakes coming out from under the porch.

I don't think he was poisonous. The only poisonous snake he resembled was a cotton mouth, but I don't think his head was wide enough, plus I didn't see a stripe on the side of his head. Kind of hard to tell, as he was pissed.

Is there anything I can pour down between the cracks of my deck that snakes don't like?

I know you guys from downunder don't know but here in Texas we call the farm stock ponds "tanks". So when he said his wife saw three in the tank, he meant that there was three in the water where she was fishing.
And no Alan I don't know anything for snakes, other than 22 bird shot/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

Don't be too aggressive on the killin', otherwise your post might be titled:

Mice!

Rats!

go ahead an kill-em, unless its a king snake, the number of mice an rats one snake consumes is so small you'll never notice it...if its a black snake, i've seen them eat more bird eggs and young than rodents, so get rid of them too. i have "heard" that moth crystals will cause snakes to leave, in fact, the local farmers co-op use to sell something called snake away, and it was the same as moth crystals, just repackaged.

Are there any non-poison water snakes? I saw one in the pond while weed-whaking on Sunday, if I could have reached it I would have whaked him! I didn't get a good luck as he was in the moss. Saw another by the fence but it was a garter snake, didn't hurt him, but sure gave me the willies BTW, this is in Kentucky.

The most common water snake in my part of the country is non-poisonous - the Texas Water Snake. It is reddish and black, striped, and more common than the cottonmouth water mocassin. The mocassins around here are pretty aggressive and fearless. I have shot a couple over the years when they were coming at me! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Alan,
Powdered sulphur is an exellent snake deterent. You can find in at any hardware / feed & seed store. Pour some down the cracks or around the perimeter of the porch and the snakes will not cross over it. If you can get it under the porch to keep the rain off of it it will last for several weeks.

Alan, I don't know for sure whether it works or not, but know that a number of people put mothballs under the house, in cracks, etc. as a snake deterrrent.
