A question for those of you blowing snow. If you have a PTO with variable speeds, do you run your PTO at 540 or 1000 rpm? When I first got my tractor I tried at 540 but the snow was so deep it would just plug up the chute, plus when it did blow I couldn't get any distance on the snow. I tried 1000 rpm after that I can send the snow 30 feet in the air!! Works great if there's a little wind, blows the snow right off my yard!! However, I had a little clutch trouble recently and am wondering if the extra speed creates that much more wear and tear on the clutch?
What engine RPM were you runing with the PTO in 540? If it wasn't around 2300 engine RPM(green area on tach), you were not getting 540 on the PTO.
If you put the PTO in 1000 RPM, the problem is that if you exceed about 1200 engine RPM, you are overspeeding the impliment that is designed for a 540 RPM input...
The taller 1000 RPM ratio on the PTO would put more load on the PTO clutch, particularly getting the blower up to speed from a standstill...
