Just curious about this.....In a normal fresh snowfall, how deep (6' - 1'?) have you been able to drive your tractor through it before losing traction? Using R1's or R4's?

Thanks

The most snow I ever drove my 4115 w/R4s through was about 20" of fresh powder without a problem. The ground was dry and there wasn't any ice. :) I have lost traction in less snow with packed snow and/or ice as a base. :(

I never try to drive over the snow, because that packs the snow. I always push or blow it out of the way first.

Type of snow andtype and clearance of tractor will cause major difference in results. A high sitting tricycle will go thru some pretty deep powder that would give 4wd lower slung tractors a problem.

I have a problem with my JD 2010 when there is ice or hard packed snow if I try to take too big a bite with my back blade. I need a set of chains but haven't found a set that is under $250.
I have had my walk behind snow blower in 21 inches of snow and it worked great because the snow was not wet packed. It was slow going but worked.

I had a 4 x 8 box trailer on 15" rims filled with firewood that I pulled through fresh snow belly deep on an 8N in Michigan. Ag tires, no chains. The front of the trailer was pushing up snow until I raised it some (3 point drawbar).

I'm was wondering if the TBN members had opinions or experience about the ability of a MFWD CUT to make it through 6"-12" of snow......specifically - if I have to drive my tractor through unplowed snow (from the barn; to the gate; across a field; etc....).....how deep is going to get me in trouble - 6" of snow isn't like trying to go through 6" of mud - right?

Or should I look at it like driving a truck and not go any deeper than I would in a 4WD PU?

Thanks

We recieved 24" of snow that fell over a 24 hour period the year before last in march. I had a ford 8N with loaded ag tires and a rear blade and did the drive with that. It did not like it and I got stuck twice (15 min with large grain shovel got me unstuck each time) but it got the job done. I went from high to low grade, used momentum and took 6 to 9 inch bites. I now have a FWD tractor and we have not had that much snow at one time since I bought it! I hope we get a storm like that this year to try it out!!! :) :)

I know for a fact that my 4110 (R4 tires) will go through 12" of snow easily.

I have driven my 4wd Ford 1910, R1's, through 12" on pretty level ground with no problem.
