Snow Plow Hydrauilics.

I bought a Curtis snow plow and am mounting a QA plate to it for my tractor.

The angle cylinders are frozen up. Any insight on repair or replace?

I figure I can take them to a local hydraulic shop and have them rebuilt, or I can buy new ones, or I can just hook the hoses to them and see if they bust loose. I don't really like the last option as I don't want to run the nastiness in the cylinders into the hydraulic system.

Has anyone had snow plow cylinders rebuilt? Is it worth it? I have looked for curtis parts on line and the sources seem very limited.

I won't use this plow much, as it is just for my farm, but when I use it, I want it to work. I am looking for the cheepest way to get it reliable.

I have rebuilt the SA (single acting) cylinders Meyers uses on their plows, I am sure the Curtis ones are the same or similar...

They are very east to get apart, just remove the "gland nut" on the cylinder and then the rod/piston will pull out. You said they are "frozen up" so you may need a little tension to pull them out-or air pressure applied to the ports works sometimes also.

If the rods are rusted/pitted badly, don't waste your time-new cylinders can be found for $50-$75 each.

I hadn't thought of air to push them free. I will give that a try. Can I use a big pair of channel locks to remove the gland nut? or should I go buy a wrench?

I use a pipe wrench when I did mine...
