March was pretty slow this year at the shop. Uusaully we get some of our bigger snow storms which keeps us very busy. Not this March. So I got asked if I wanted to build a trailer to be pulled behind a snowmobile. Its notto hard for me to pass up a fabrication job and being slow at the shop made it a perfect combo /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
The sled is approx 12' long by 2' wide by 1' high. The frame and supports are made of 1.5x1.5 inch square tube (1/8" thick). The mesh (ground smooth) is on both the floor and sides. The front skiis pivot (for turning) under the sled. The skiis also pivot front to back. The rear skiis are from an exsisting sled that was to small. Basically the customer gave me the dimensions, the front skiis, and the old sled (mostly for the skiis for the rear of the sled). The sled weights about 150 - 175 lbs.
Most think the size is very odd. The sled gets pulled by a Ski-Doo Skandic, a work sled. The customer is a x-counrty ski center with a summer hiking trails and summer camp. They don't own a equipment to hauls stuff in the summer, plus it does to much damage to the trials. They would then need to be fixed up. So his theory, I have the sleds, my trails are groomed for skiing in the winter which makes them smoother than in the summer.
So far he has used it to pick-up the trail markers on grade stakes, haul out fire wood, and transport lumber into the woods to make trail crossings over wet spots and runnoff streams.
BTW... we think were going to name it the "Freighter"
