Snowmobilers

a friend here finally leased his land to a hunting club; he couldn't keep unwanted hunters off, posted or not; he always allowed folks that asked to hunt. now the hunting club has solved the problem, they take care of any an all unauthorized hunters, and he doesn't have the hassle. its a shame it has to come to that, but that seems to be where we are these days

Rob in our area our snowmobile club will come in and mark and fence trails if neccesary for the land owners. Unfortunatly sometimes it's just the neighorhood kids out playing. If it is a bonafide club trail try and find out who is in the club, you might go to a dealer and be able to find out. They do have signs that say SEEDLINGS and many more. If it is just the neighbors you will have to try to work with them.

Rob,
I think some way of marking the seedlings would be a good idea. (Snow fence, signage, etc). We have a golf course here that lets snowmobilers on during the winter but they always had some putzes who drove across the greens and damaged them. This year I noticed they just circled the entire green(s) with snow fence. I don't know your layout but it comes in 50 ft rolls, is plastic so is reusable year to year, and can be put in pretty easily with T posts.
Thomas - with regards courts using common sense - if that were the case we wouldn't need tort reform. Just had a case here locally where an inmate (who killed a Deputy a few years ago while trying to escape) sued the prison he was being held in because he was attacked by another inmate and cut up pretty badly. He rcvd $75,000, presumably because the guards failed to adequately protect him. The family of the deputy he killed can't get any of that money because the statute of limitations is up. (The inmate represented himself, probably with the help of the nice law library the taxpayers supply to each prison). Courts use common sense??? Thats heracy!!!!!

Hi Rob, Just planted a 100 spruce and several fruit trees on my land. I have snowmachines on my property sometimes so I put orange reflective tape on trees that seem to be in harms way. I know it seems like a big pain in the butt but the people seem to try and not hit the tape. On somethings like my wellhead I drove a pole into the ground and covered it with tape. I don't want to post my property and so far this year has been a good year with hunters etc.
Good luck, Al

Gerard, Maine has a similar law.

Thanks all, for your suggestions. The trees are Norway Spruce and the deer have walked by, but not yet eaten any. Maybe waiting for harsher weather. I ended up getting 36" grade stakes and staked each tree and added a day-glo ribbon to each stake. Snow is melting so I'll have to wait to see if it helps. And yes, we do have a snowmobile club with an extensive trail system in the area. I suspect these are kids out joyriding locally. They've also made a mess of a neighbor's earthen berm. Thanks again for the help and I'll post the results of my effort after the next snow (Wed?).

I saw on nando.net a few weeks ago a story about a father and eight year old son out walking/camping a less traveled part of their property. It was on the west coast. They ran into another father and eight year old son. They were tending/guarding their pot plot and shot both the landowner father AND eight year old son. The piece of filth father then got remorseful and put the two victims into their truck. Eventually they made it to a hospital but I think the landowner father died. The killer had a heart attack and appears to have died as well. Which is no loss.

I HATE no trespass signs but my property is posted. I don't like it, but to protect my family from getting sued, posting is the best thing to do. So far, I have not had problems with hunters but I have had problems with neighbor's trespassing and being rude.

Its really a shame all around...

Hope this helps...
