We could see the smoke column from our house.
We need to do controlled burns to reduce fuel loads that we have allowed to build up for the last 100+ years. Lots of them. Some of them are going to escape, because we can't always predict what fire will do. We can't stop doing all controlled burns when one escapes. Another controlled burn scheduled for today got cancelled. They say they may do it in a year or two. This Estrada one was all of 20ac and the other canceled one was 10ac. Which is peanuts.
Other than being dry the weather was good, at least at my house. There was no wind. Obviously they got some there at the wrong time. It's really windy now and we have a series of storms coming for tonight and the next week, so it's unsuitable now and will be for some time.
Two years to get a permit is insane. I wonder if that delay, and wanting a "good burn", was due to the local air resources board emissions requirements. Air boards are going to have to relax requirements for controlled burns if we're to get out of the mess we put ourselves in.

It's currently 145 ac and 60% contained, with rain expected tonight. No buildings were lost. The evacuation warning was temporary and they closed the shelter because no one was in it. So unless it blows up in the next few hours it won't have been bad at all. They were planning more burns there in the future so it may have saved some effort there.
