I went to Amazon and the best bang for the buck was Conntek ROJ Black 7 Way Plug Inline Trailer Cord.

Reviewers had written the colors were sometimes mixed up. the spec sheet that comes with the cord has a legend which shows:
TM - Brown
LT - Yellow
Grnd - White
BR - Red
RT - Green
Aux - Black
BU - Blue

That's 7 wires, at least they could count. What I received was wired:
TM - Green
LT - Red
Grnd - White
BR - Blue
RT - Brown
Aux - Black
BU - Yellow

Very glad that I had read the warnings to be careful. I thought other reviewers were exaggerating. I will now have a totally messed up wiring scheme that I will have to relabel.

It would have been better if they just shipped the plug WITHOUT connecting the wire. But I need to install it and can't wait a week to return it.

So buyer beware!

I just hope I don't need someone else to work on the trailer!!

Maybe I'm missing something. Why don't you just put the wires where they should be. Should only take a few minutes.

Yes you are missing something - I bought a cord with a plug that's pretty firmly molded on, cord and plug are ONE piece. The manufacturer provides a wiring diagram - Which bears little resemblance to reality.

I should have bought the 25' cord and cut off the end and put my own ends on several pieces, but I needed it quick, 12' long, and inexpensive and there wasn't any local source.

To just buy the cord all I found online cost about $2/foot plus shipping.

There is a DOT standard for the seven pin connector same as all the other configurations. The basic premise is each pin position has its unique function. Function not color is the key. Using the color code make sure the wire end is connected proper function wise. In your case ring out each wire by position and mark by function. The factory wired jacks on vehicles are required to meet that DOT standard. Trailer umbilical cords on new trailers likewise. Owner wired stuff; you have to trace each wire out and mark by function.

Ya.. pin out is more important than wire color.. I bought a REESE one that had the electric brakes on rear lights reversed. Imagine locking up when you turned on the lights... Wire color was good though :)

Different auto manufacturers use different color schemes for wiring the jacks / plugs. As previously stated, the jack mounted to your vehicle, if factory, will meet DOT guidelines for function at each pin/blade location. (See diagram below but don't expect the colors to match you cable. Use a ohm / resistance meter to determine the color of wire going to each pin / blade location & then you are set connect to the appropriate wire on your trailer.

I think you guys are missing his point. He's not comparing the new pigtailed plug he bought to the trailer or truck. The plug manufacturer sent a spec sheet telling him which color wire operates a function on the plug end. But he tested the cord/plug and found the spec sheet is wrong. If he trusted the color legend from the spec sheet, and tapped into the appropriate function wires on his trailer, he would have real problems. Good thing he tested the cord colors to find out where each was connected at the plug end.

Now you are going to kill the discussion. :)

I was just trying to warn any others looking for the least expensive solution.
