I recently traded my '60 MF35 diesel in on an '88 MF240. The dealer gave me $2400 and the only issue my MF35 had was a leaking injector pump. Did I get a fair trade value? I owned the MF 35 for 12 years and had the engine rebuilt about 8 years ago. It ran great, had new tires, 12volt conversion, and good sheet metal. But, I was ready for power steering, a sun canopy, and a little more power.

Good to hear you moved up to what you wanted. What is given on trade-ins often does not mean much without the info on the other side of the trade.

Some would have done better perhaps and some would most likely done worse. The key is you have a much more modern tractor that is 24 years newer. :D

Here is a new injector pump for under $900 if you ever see the new owner. This is the main reason old diesels sell for less than old gas tractors. The cost would be about the same for our larger 1976 Perkins. I have started to using the Wal-Mart TCW3 marine oil at a 1:128 ratio in the fuel to try to make the injectors and pump last longer with the new type grade of diesel we have to run today.

To find out the retail value, have someone call the dealer and ask what they are looking to get for the tractor. Ken Sweet

I would have bought the tractor you describe in a heart beat for $2400. What a bargain.....My uncle had one he bought new in the early sixties, I always loved that tractor, and as a small boy, I was so impressed with it size, and powerful sounding engine.

What a nice tractor.....I can sell one in that shape for about $4000 here in the Pacific NW.

But you got a nice tractor in the MF240 to use as you wish.

Is this your recently traded tractor?

Massey Ferguson 35 Diesel Deluxe

Yes, that is it!! The guys that bought it must have fixed the injector pump. The guy that owns the business is a retired tractor mechanic with around 40 years experience. He said he could rebuild the injector pump fairly easily. I was hoping they would repaint it and all, but I guess the cosmetics were good enough. It is a nice tractor and I enjoyed it for 12 years, but the MF240 is really nice too.

I figured if I had the injector pump rebuild or replaced, it would cost me about $1200 parts labor. That would put me at $3,600 ($1,200 + the $2,400 trade in value) and not leave too much room from the $4,000 I thought the tractor was worth in the overall good condition that it is in. So the trade was worth it to me.

I have a MF trained Mechanic that works for me and he just rebuilt Injector pump like on the 35 MF last week for $600 parts and labor and profit. The main thing is, you are happy with the trade and that is all that really matters. Ken Sweet

I very seriously doubt he has done anything to it, except list it on ebay, and craigslist. Quick profit, and some future paying repair work. Buta-bing-buta-bang. :D
