solid plate or expanded metal for bottom of tongue storage on equipment trailer?

I like the expanded metal. I deal with dirt and dust more than with rain and mud though.

The expanded metal I have/might use has openings only large enough to just put the tip of your finger in, so I can not see 5/16-3/8 chain having an issue??

I was visualizing a larger size expanded metal. I had made one years ago and it was larger, it was so bad I had to cut it out and replace it with a piece of plate.......Mike
