I have a 6520 with 350 hours; have had it for three years. Sometimes the pre-heating indicator light stays on after all the other lights go out, other times it goes out after the initial display along with all the other lights. Does this indicate that the glow plugs work sometimes and sometimes not? It always starts and we have had some pretty cold weather--like in the 20s.

Also, I am rigging up a winch to put on the three point hitch. Have not decided weather to use hydraulic, roller chain, or direct PTO drive. (If I use direct drive it would have to be mounted off-center.) It is a 20,000 pound winch off an old military truck. I like the idea of hydraulic, but don't know whether the 6520's 11 gallon pump has sufficient capacity.

I would appreciate all advice.

Fritzchrag,
I have never paid attention to that light. I do in my Cummins as it has a "Wait to start" message. I think the length of time the light is on all depends on how cold or warm the engine is. I always keep my 6520 plugged into a trickle charger. Don't know if keeping the battery topped off changes anything or not. But she always starts up good and fast.
hugs, Brandi

I hope that someone will have an answer for the winch on the three point hitch.

Is the three point hitch strong enough to mount a winch and pull a load from. I got stuck the other day and had to get a wrecker to come and pull me out. If I had a winch mounted on the three point I could have gotten out before making such a hole trying to drive out. It took the second wrecker to come and get me out as the first failed to pull my 6530 out.

Thanks,
JiRobbi

The 3ph is plenty strong enough to mount a winch on it.

Hi,
Would I be able to pull a 6530 out of a severly stuck bog with the winch mounted to the 3PH?

Thanks,
Jimmie

As long as your bracketry that attaches it to the 3ph is made strong enough.

Hi. Welcome to the forum.
**I have a 7520 the same age as yours. The tractors are virtually identical except for a few features, pto and hyd delivery are a couple. Mine uses an intake air preheater located in the intake manifold instead of glow plugs. Shortly after I got mine the timer-relay that energizes the heater at the 1st key click began to stick on after it timed out. The heater demand is 45A [the entire alternator output] so the battery would just hold even while running the tractor. If it was still stuck after turning off the tractor the battery would go totally dead pretty quick. I found the problem the 2nd time it did this and verified it by phone with the service rep. He said to just unplug the relay until they got a new one to me - that it would start fine without it unless it was really cold. I found this was true down to the hi 20s. It was quite a while before I got the relay so I put in a manual switch. I think your relay is working fine. Perhaps you are seeing a timer-temperature related function. Im unclear whether both are incorporated automatically in the system, or whether the heater just comes on for a set time after each start.

You will have no problem driving a winch hydraulicly. If it uses a big motor it will just be a little slow on the 11gpm available.

This is fritzschrag again--I'm not sure how to navigate this forums system.

:)Just want say that I really appreciate all the input. I'm leaning a bit toward just mounting my winch off-center (for less wear and tear on the u-joints) and using direct PTO drive, with a slip clutch inline.
