Why was the hunkering down thread closed? Are they just closed after so many postings or did I say something wrong? Just curious.

In regard to some of that, I was an accountant in my old life. People I worked with and folks we knew made fun of us constantly for not leveraging our money, borrowing against our house and investing in the market. They would point out to us how we were losing so much money.

They also gave us a rough time when we would buy a rental, first to much work, then we would either pay cash or pay it off quickly. (We buy cheap, you make your money up front, not buying and renting with negative cash flow waiting for the property to go up, if it does, well good luck to you, have resold several and have only a 4 rentors now, soon to be 5, but we hope that will supplement our retirement.) People informed us our money was not working for us, well guess what we grew it slowly, but we still have it also, it didn't go poof.

Okkkkkkkkkkk, now we hear nothing, just silence. Many have lost the overleveraged assets or taken a killing in their fund accounts. Anyone our age, I'm soon to be 63 have seen many busts, realized what was happening could not continue. Houses don't continue up for ever and stock dont either.

The reason I would be scared of the market now is so many funds are ponzi schemes and so many businesses have and are going to go bankrupt, who and what do you trust? I too get the WSJ and read it religiously, even the money people are confused and don't know which way to go.

One thing I did do back a few years ago is invested in I bonds, their earnings are inflation adjusted. However, now they limit you to $30k a year to invest in and can't find any banks that will let me put them in Roths anymore. Though you can't over a certain income anyway. But some I bought 6 years ago are earning 6 to 8%, that is what the government is paying for money, wish I had a potful of them.

Yes it was your fault.:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

TBN limits political and religious conversations. Back in the day we had these type of conversations on TBN which were very interesting and usually polite. But as TBN grew larger the conversations became disruptive.

ONCE upon a time I actually read every single word in every thread on TBN. I don't think that is possible now, TBN is just too huge. With more people its just too easy for religious and political conversations to go out of control. There is a local website and chatlist for my county and it can get real UGLY with politics. But then our local politics is very UGLY.:rolleyes:

You mentioned a politicians name. This seems to be a lightning rod that will close a thread. :D Course Dargo mentioned a politicians name by inference so we can blame Dargo too. :D Heck, since Dargo has been around TBN longer than you lets just say it was Dargo's fault! :D

Most of us have closed helped close a thread on TBN at one time or the other. Heck, I have had posts disappear though I thought I had steered well clear of politics and religion. :D

Welcome to TBN! Don't take the thread closure personally, the Mods are just keeping TBN friendly. Besides it was Dargo's fault. :D:D:D

Later,
Dan

Sorry about that, don't know how you can have a conversation without some politicians names being in it. But hey this forum was here long before I showed up so I need to conform or else!

I hope I don't do that again, but hence the name I am a patriot! What can I say! Gosh here 2 whole days and already had a thread closed, ohhhh.

So Patriotic Stabiliist the question is, "If you had a million $ today, what would you do with it to maximize it's earnings safely and minimize it's exposure to the tax man?" Who knows, I might win the lottery!

Well you never know, might be there someday if we live long enough!;) But doubtful

CD's at various banks up to the limit, that would only be 4 banks for now, though need to rethink that, limits may be lowered by end of year back to $100,000. If we met the income criteria more in Roths, I still like I bonds, rates are low now but they have 2 components. One is the fixed rate portion when purchased, the other part is adjustable every 6 months to the cost of living index. Right now the fixed portion isn't very good though, I expect it to get higher as treasury has trouble selling bonds and have to raise the rates to sell them. Maybe some municipal bonds, but a little leery of that right now, not sure how they are doing. Maybe some Vanguard Funds.

And/or buy a couple of duplexes, lowball only. Fix up and rent. We would like 10 renters, when this property is done we will have 5, though one is just a mobile home lot at Frisco, Tx. We had 6 renters but sold 2 of the townhomes, I won't buy more. To many issues with common walls, common areas, and HOA fees, they just keep rising. Also they are the first to lose value in a slump and the last to recover, at least here that is true. When prices went up I sold those 2 and stashed the cash for when prices went down again. We bought the one SFH in Feb, may buy more, but the price has to be right. I do have a little farm in Indiana that is cash rented. And next year one of the big strip shovels is walking across it and paying me a tidy sum, about 6 times more than mom and dad paid for it!

Life is good!:D
