FLDave, this thread just makes me sick, I am constantly amazed at what so-called humans are capable of. I am sorry for your loss and wish nothing less than an inhumane long lingering painful cruel uncomfortable drawn out death on the scum that did this to dog. As my wish is very likely never to come true, let me just totally agree with what JUNKMAN wrote about getting the bullet put into evidence. Heck, you might even be able to get the police to confiscate the weapons from next door with a search warrent and match that bullet up to one of their guns.

Well, this makes the story even sader!! I wish you could have linked up with the owner sooner... Maybe you folks can get more police action... If the owner normally keeps his dog confined and he just got out once then I really feel sorry for him... (I feel for the dog anyway). Life has been harder on animals ever since man threw the first rock....
I had two very large dogs on my porch one day eating the cat food. They were nice and they had collars. I got a phone number off one and called.. The guy said he'd be right there. He drove up in about 5 minutes. He lives a couple miles away. I felt good about it until he said "this happens all the time." Then I felt a little put out.. What a jerk I thought. Why can he not confine his dogs? How many other folks have been called into duty to rescue his dogs? I thought next time I would call animal control and then call him. Then it would cost him money. I doubt I would do it cuz he might leave them there....I think if you find a stray without id you should probabally call animal control. "Boy" might have found his way home if you did...I think either say "this is my new dog" and protect it or call the shelter....Not trying to make you feel worse but you did have the opportunity to take complete control of the situation. My wife the vet treats animals all the time that people find and feed for awhile. They seem to want a reward for saying "it is not even my cat/dog". She informs them right then that this is your cat/dog. You own it now. You are responsible. I still wish I could vaporize your neighbor for you!!!!

It is a shame that this happened, and the owner of Gator should feel the most guilty of all, IMO. If he had secured his pet dog with a collar with name and home phone number, not a single person would be needing to offer sympathy to anyone. Least of all, pointing a finger to a 'neighbor' who may not be guilty in the first place.

Also, letting the dog run after feeding it, and not putting on a collar and tying it up when not around leads another to have to assume some guilt for the real loser, the dog.

I have two neighbors with dogs, that like to run, and bark like h*** at me when I am on my property. I had to get between one of them and my two granddaughters one day which didn't make me very happy. It would have been dead if I had been carrying (maybe not, as I would not have shot it with the grandkids watching). These dogs owners seem to think my property is their 'stool' ground to dump on, and then I get the dark green clumps of grass instead of them, as well as the squishy mess wrapped up in my tires to stink up my garage.

Sorry, but if you have a dog, don't leave it out for the neighbors to have to take care of it, or to have to provide a place for it to 'run free'.

Still, the real loser here is the poor dog.

Extremely sad, I would strongly suggest a fenced yard for the dogs if at all possible. If that happened to one of ours, I most likely would commit some irrational act. If I think calmly, I agree with the idea of pursuing this with the police. Stay after them. Whoever did this is someone that should be investigated at the very least. I don't know the circumstances that preceded this but, but I would certainly stay on it.

I pretty much agree with "beenthere".

I am sitting on both sides of this issue as I type. My neighbor lets his dogs run loose on our property. He knocks over my garbage when I don't have it tied to the gate. I have called and complained. He said I just need to get to know his 120 lb black lab that also growls and snarls at us. No telling what he'd do to a kid. The loser is usually the dog in these cases. I have to say, most people judge a book by its cover, and if you have a loose pit bull or rottweiler in the country, it will probably end up getting shot.

I am a dog lover. Had one most all my 44 years of life. Lost mine last year. Don't have a new one yet....

1)build a pig pen right on your side preferably up wind from them.
2)build a motocross or RC gas racetrack right next to the fence.

That, is a differant story altogether. Problem animals like may in fact leave you no choice.

Not really a different story at all, all roaming dogs WILL cause trouble to some degree. That dog was not mean or anything, just had a strong hunting instinct I suppose. Both the calf and dogs death were the owners fault.
I would understand if someone shot my dog for chasing stock, would feel very bad for the dog, but understand.

Did the bullet travel all the way through the dog or is it still in there somewhere? If so, dig it out and save it for the future, just in case.

As for the neighbor... build a 6' stockade fence with the nice side towards your house and the ugly side towards them. Then forget about them. Go about your life like they do not exist and call the police every time they try to remind you that they do exist. Consider a restraining order, too. The main thing to do is go about your life like they don't exist. If you get worked up about them, then they have power over you. Don't let that happen. Fence them off and be done with them.

Best of luck to you and sorry for your having to explain bad people to your daughter. However, it is a fact of life that there are bad people out there. How you handle the situation is a big lesson to your family. Tough choices. Keep a cool head. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Just read the part about the dog's owner looking for it. Double tragedy, as the dog was wanted by its owner.

As far as the police searching the neighbor's house for guns... let's not go down that road. If no one saw the dog get shot, no one saw the neighbor with a gun and heard a shot, etc... I doubt the police will go looking for the gun that did it. Like others have said, it could have been someone else, a passerby, a punk kid or maybe someone else felt threatened by the dog. Many people have unrational fear of dogs. I once saw a group of four grow women grab their kids and run screaming from a black cat at a garage sale. I didn't think that kind of fear existed, but it does.

I'll stick with my 'build a fence and try to forget they exist' strategy and let the police handle any confrontations. Again, sorry for your problems.
