Someone smarter than me please help!

Hello I'm new here and am looking for some help. Today I was pulling a 5' 3 point tiller with my Oliver 550. Everything was normal then it seemed like I could smell something was running a little hot. I ran to the gas station and did a few things around the house...gave the tractor plenty of time to cool down- probably 40 minutes.

After cooling down I jumped back on the tractor I engaged the pto and as soon as I touch the tiller to the soil the pto/ tiller stops immediately.

A little background I just had the tractor 3 point serviced as I was about to load the tractor up a kid came by and told the owner "I just added another 1/2 gallon of fluid back there"... This was after all work was done.

I just checked the fluids and the hydraulic oil in back that the kid was talking about was waaaaay past the full line on the dipstick...almost to the top of the filler neck. Is this just coincidence or does the fluid being that much over full be causing my pto issues. If so, why would it have worked just fine earlier in the day?

Welcome to TBN... were you able to determine the source of the smell....from the tiller or from the tractor.....typically, overfilling is not a good thing but I can't tell you exactly what the negative result, if any, might be.

The smell was from the tractor. The tiller is fine, it spins freely no issues there.

Too much fluid can blow seals in the hydraulics. The wiser folks on here can tell you if the clutch pack for the PTO might have gotten doused and causing the burning smell. Or if the shop that did the service is conveniently located take it back there and let them check it out. I'm curious as to what you find.

Yeah taking it back to the shop requires a trailer and a 40 minute ride each way...It will be going back to the shop but they are closed till Monday. It just makes me wonder why it worked perfect then stopped after it had time to cool down.

Is your PTO stopped or is the clutch on the PTO slipping. If not there I would look at the clutch adjustment of the transmission. If you have a 2 stage clutch (push part way to stop the trans and further down to stop the PTO) it could be out of adjustment.

The clutch is not slipping and it is not a 2 stage clutch

When you let the tiller down, does the PTO shaft stop or just the tines stop? Have you checked the slip clutch on the tiller if it has one,

The pto output completely stops. There is no power to make the slip clutch on the tiller slip.

Or does the Tranny stop the wheels too?
