Few John Deere's and one Ford 3600 diesel.
Has anyone else happen to notice that the 5x03 series tractors yellow rims seem to fade prematurely in color? I bring up this small point because as I've been shopping around looking at new and used tractors, I have begun to notice this on most 5x03 models that have greater then 200 hours on them or that have been sitting on the dealer's lot for awhile. Is the weather effecting them that bad? could this be a quality control issue on just this model? no other series of JD's, new or used(the ones that have been at least decently taken care of) seem to have this fading occuring to their rims. Small issue I know, but this could or could not be the early signs of premature rust. Maybe its the kind of paint the India plant is using. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this or am I just noticing it and making it too big of an issue(worried about potential of premature rust).

Hmm... could be something to your observations. I know this much --- I'd sure like to have a new 5603 on the place so I could do a little quality control comparisons with! (Oh, just remembered they're made in GA.)

Well, then I'd like to have both a 5603 and a 5403 to do a taste test with!

Hey,
I've got a 2003 model 5103 and have also notice my rims fading. I haven't given it much thought though........I'd like to know also if there's gonna be a problem down the road.

well I am under the impression that it might be bad paint. although I can not imagine that I am the first to notice this, there HAS to be acctual owners out there noticing it too and contacting their dealers. it should be a warranty thing. I repainted my rims on my '78 2 years ago with JD Yellow paint straight from the dealer......still like new til this day, no fading, cracking, nothing. If your tractor is still under warranty, cal the dealer, mention this, ask them if they'll repaint it for you. God forbid pay $14,000 for something and the rims start to fade and maybe rust after only a short amount of time.

Fading paint and rust are two different issues. Bright colors are very susceptible to fading,That does not mean the paint is going away(or getting thinner) it means that the sunlight is dulling the top surface of the paint. we have at the home farm a `2000 5510 and its yellow wheels are as bright (or at least appear to be) as when new. Generally paint that fades quickly is of lower quality(less of the expensive pigments and uv inhibitors) But that does not mean it is not sealing the surface from corrosion. Paint and its application processes are very expensive in todays industrial world.
