I don't get into this end of the forum alot, so be kind! I bought a '47 John Deere "M" last fall. I'm not going to be a restoration fanatic about it, but bought it from it's second owner. First order of business was to remove the 're-route' exhaust manifold and restore it to a straighht up pipe. Looking at those 'nasty' rusted bolts, I thought I'd have a real challenge! The original owner apparenty put it on to be able to work under fruit trees. It aims the exhaust down and back to the driver's left. Well, I sprayed PB Blaster on the target bolts, for about a week! Ran to heat, re-sprayed, repeat, repeat, repeat etc. Yesterday I took the nerve and 'viola'! They spun out! I'm on my way to getting it back to 'close' to original! ~Scotty

M's are nice, fun to work on. Several members of my EDGE/TA chapter have restored M's.
I'm restoring a 1951 Minneapolis Moline BF tractor (27 hp Hercules gas engine). Can't tell you how many stuck parts I've had to soak in PB Blaster, WD-40, Kroil, and/or ATF/acetone to get the dang stuff apart. Right now the shaft in the water pump is stuck and is soaking in Kroil. Haven't been able to locate a new or rebuilt pump so I guess I'll be struggling with that stuck shaft for awhile longer. If that doesn't work, there's always the torch to heat the parts and quench in WD-40. I hate to do that with castings -- don't want to do something foolish and crack the housing on that water pump.

Years ago I owned and raced an old Alfa Romeo. When working on the engines you got the idea that Italian engineers must have had an idea that things may have to be removed some day.

The exhaust studs were steel but the bolts were brass! What an idea, never a problem with rust, never had to soak anything.

That's exactly the reason I have a couple of bottles of never-sieze around. Especially on those maniflold parts.. As long as I keep stuff..., I may be the next guy to take it off.

I removed the "J" tube from the ex. manifold on my 310B Case this week. The first bolt backed out like it had eyes... The second one snapped off, after a quarter turn. I'm replacing the manifold, so no biggie... Just had to remove the J tube, to get the FEL off.

You can bet your boots the bolts in the new maniflod will get a liberal dose of never sieze..!!

I agree in Never-Seize, Even on lug nuts! Some guys, I swear, soak the bolts in 'salt-water' before installation! ~Scotty

Toad - Your right! I've got a 54 MGTF thats a dream to work on, But, I swear when my Jeep Cherokee was built, they put the heater control box with the vent doors and vacuum actuators, on the assembly line first,.........and then build the car around it! $1400- bucks to get that puppy replaced!
