South Carolina Woman Arrested For Cheering Too Loudly at Daughter's Graduation

In this make believe exercise, I subdue all other spectators with chloroform and watch the ceremony in peace by myself.

In real life, I've never seen one that didn't required an invitation/ticket.

Fair enough...

I didn't mean to end the discussion with my make believe exercise, but that sure seems to be the effect.

Or maybe it turns out I'm on alot of "ignore" lists and nobody has seen it!!

I think your exercise is a good way to work over the situation, but I think most of us have eaten this cookie and moved on to the next one. We often don't finish one before we start the next.:D

Ok sorry for my absence..Building a recording studio and it needed attention.

First off my definition of ruckus is probably lame compared to most. His immediate family cheered loudly and not even that long. But it was sufficient to make the point and let the principal know they were there and supporting their child against this abuse of power.

I am not sure if they could prohibit someone from attending a graduation based on it being a private event. I am not sure the private event qualifies if it is funded by taxpayers for graduates that completed the program and did not break rules prior to arrival.
That part of the family is not the litigious sort but I could see a lawsuit if you prohibited a kid from experiencing graduation with his friends in front of his family for a made-up rule. I suppose the principal or board knew that so they let him go up on stage and they let the family cheer loudly.

Perhaps I could have done better to be clear. Yes anyone can call for the arrest of anyone..In context what I was saying is that the school board would have the weight of the police behind them to carry it out at their beckon call. Keep in mind I am talking about down the road after this power has had the chance to slide down the path and be abused.

Yes anyone can discusss. I think you may have taken that out of context or just trying to make a separate point. That was meant to diffuse a situation and try to offer a way to overcome a pride issue if someone needed an opening. I have sometimes gone too far and when someone offered peacable response it grounded me and graciously allowed me to come back without feeling too embarassed. I was trying to offer an opening and hope it did not come across any other way.

I was not implying that a trap was laid for Mrs Cooper. I am implying that power is abused and once it is released, even in degrees of separation, to the school board to be able to make a rule that if you cheer past 4 seconds you could be arrested, you run the risk of that power and the ability to call on LEO's to enforce that power to be used against persons that the principal or board doesn't like.

So here is my summary and I am going to ease out of this becuase the dead horse has been beaten, twice at least:

Use great caution when putting punishment on things that aggravate you. Keep a bigger picture mindset...Is this worth relinquishing basic right of freedom over? In this case of this particular woman, yes, I think she needed to be arrested (remember I said I was not supporting her) as the true story was not represented in the headline of this thread. She was not arrested, in fact, for cheering too loudly but for significant disturbance of the peace.

It is my hope that I have kept fresh the argument for individual right of freedom and a little "southern pride" if you will.
Our forefathers died for the right of freedom and to keep the demons of police/military state from being allowed into our country. Be on guard that we don't allow it on our watch.

Lastly the quote of "your rights end where mine begin" can be accurate but is also often used with stubborn disregard for others true rights. How different does it sound to say My rights end where yours begin...wierd huh?

Anyway I have enjoyed the banter...I hope things are left where my position to bring out this point has caused people to think. Wether or no you agree with my beliefs and concerns I trust we can keep an open mind about each other. While we may agree or disagree on this point we may be opposite on the next and funny how feelings change when that happens.

I think we agree on a lot of points, Dwight. I don't think that organizations (like a school) should have any law-enforcement authority. However, at a large gathering, who else (besides police) would have the authority to enforce policies, should people disturb the event. I have no problem with a police presence at an event as a contingency, but they shouldn't be controlled (nor do I believe they ever will) by a school principal.

They could start using bouncers and coolers like Roadhouse! Now that would make graduation an event for sure!

Ha! I would go to that graduation...knowing someone or not.

I'd go with you - we'd just have to behave!
