Spade work with 2 wheeler

In "2 Wheel Tractors - Buying & Using", it was suggested that you can excavate trenches for laying pipe or cable.

Does this mean a 2 wheel tractor can do spade work? Specifically, digging up small trees or shrubs such that they can be transplanted?

Trenches for pipe or wire are done while driving along with a plow or furrowing attachment. That won't work for digging a hole or digging up a plant.

You can make a very long, shallow hole but not a very short, deep hole.

It would be a very useful attachment. Maybe it would be possible with a reciprocating pipe with a spade on the end.

Hey Jobob,

Earth tools offers a wood splitter made by Bell for $1500 and BCS dealers offer a Wallenstien wood splitter for $1930. I've told Joel a couple times that he could modify his splitter to have quick couplers on the lines and offer the auger head. You could buy a used backhoe with blown engine like this one and use the Grillo or BCS to power it -

What would this look like with a BCS? The mode would need a 'cart' style connection so you could ride it to the work site.

I don't want to state the obvious but the Berta Franco rotary plow does a good job of making trenches 8" to 12" deep in a fairly straight line for cable and tubing. It is not good a making tight turns as going around a root ball.

I have seen the plow mounted in a vertical position as opposed to tilted to the right for plowing. This is easy to do on the BCS with the removable quick hitch tang. Drilling other holes in the steel adapter flange allow the tang to mounted so the plow is vertical for trenches and drainage ditches.

The rotary plow can be used to create holes about 12" in diameter and up to 12" deep by leaving the tractor stationary and allowing the rotary plow to just dig. I use this for planting 3-year transplant Christmas trees.

Agreed, I've seen a nice video demonstrating the utility of the rotary plow on a two-wheeled tractor.

Right. What I haven't seen is a 2-wheel tractor removing a root ball or picking up a 1 cubic foot rock.

As far as mounting the backhoe, I'd think that you'd want to mount it rigid to the tractor and put a steering axle on the front with a lever to steer it back to the operators station. You'd still walk to each jobsite and steer the axle with a steering lever to the right of the tractor handlebars. This is how the Caeb round baler and Molon rake are controlled. The tractor itself would only be for propulsion and to run the PTO hydraulic pump.

Thanks for the equipment names. I've watched videos on both the Caeb round baler and Molon rake. Pretty cool.
