I thought about posting this in general attachments but decided I wanted a more focused opinion from the Blue team.

As my landscaping progresses my little 42" mower becomes less of a convenience and more of a chore, time to bring in new team members.

I have my eye on a Mott Super 88 flail mower for the pasture areas. The price is good but reading the manf. brochure indicates I need a bigger tractor. Since that ain’t happenin’, I’ll ask the collective here if I’m pushing my little 33D too far. The literature indicates material cut sizes up to 1” but my needs are medium density grasses no more than 6”-10” cut to about 4”. I’m not sure which blades are on the unit but eventually it will have the course-cut blades.

I could just get a cheap brush hog but sometimes a rock/stick gets in the way and with critters nearby, let’s just say my life will be better off if I’m not throwing rocks at the horses.

Opinions solicited…
Cutting Widths 88”
Knife Pairs - Coarse Cut 44
Knife Pairs - Fine Cut 108
Approximate Weight 1035 lbs.
Minimum Tractor HP 40 HP
Recommended HP 51 HP
Cutter Shaft 4-1/2” dia, 3/8” wall
Size of Material Cut: Up to 1” diameter grass and weeds

If you hang a chain net around the bush hog, it should stop things from being thrown very far. Lot's of 'em come that way. My cheapo from TSC just blows everything out the back or lays it down under the mower. I'd think some kind of guard, maybe some flat stock steel or even some 2x6 boards hanging from chain repair links run into eyebolts around the edges of the hog, would eliminate the worry about thrown objects.

We are a NH and Alamo Industrial dealer. Why not look at the SH74 instead of the SH88? The 74 would work behind that tractor for what you are doing with it. And you are correct the flails you have no worries about debris coming out from underneath it. Just keep in mind that the greasing is an absolulte must on the super heavy duty flails.

The bank is a little low right now due to a recent chipper purchase, there was a greater need to thin the forest but I really need to cut mowing time.

The 88" I'm looking at is advertised at $250 but lacks a gearbox and the seller can't tell me anything about the blades. It is a good distance from me so before I spend $100 in diesel, I wanted to get a warm fuzzy about the possibility of it working behind my tractor.

We might still do business if I find myself in need of a gearbox and knives. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Well before you purchase the machine you might want to get an idea of what the parts are going to run. You can purchase a new one for around $4000.00 I don't know what a complete gearbox assembly would run, nor on the blades. The blades our parts department stocks are the double sided 3 oz knives so you can flip them once they wear.
