I have a new BX25D and want to get a post hole digger for it. One came up on craigslist w/a 9" auger bit, a Model 65 SpeeCo. They make a sub compact unit as well, but I'm wondering if the 65 will fit on the 25D's 3 point? Anyone know? It's a fair priced deal and will save me at least a hundred fifty over buying a newer unit, and probably tack on a couple hundred more for a subcompact one. Thanks in advance

I hope someone chimes in, I had bought that model last spring for mine. There was a grand openeing at a local store, Farm & Fleet, and picked it up for under $200, i didnt buy the auger yet but they were only about $100. Got a big deck project coming and it now looks like next year. I thought i had read somewhere somebody used one on there BX23xx, so thats when I ended up buying it.

Speeco Model 65 PHD

I've been using that Speeco PHD on my older BX2230 for about 10 years now with no problems. Did have to add a 4th mounting hole for the U shaped lower link tube to attach to the boom since the 3 pre - drilled holes wouldn't work with the BX's short 3 point geometry, but after that it has been fine. You'd want to make sure the PTO coupler is not too long when it's fully in the ground... if it butts into the back of the tractor rear end, it can damage the transmission housing. Lopping a couple inches off with a hacksaw only takes a minute or so.

I have a Lienbach Line post hole digger that I bought with my tractor. It was OK, but the digging edge would wear out quickly. After a few years of messing around with that one, I discovered the Speeco auger bits at Atwoods. It is a direct replacement that bolts up exactly the same. It was a huge improvement over what I had before and I liked it a lot until I had to do a big fence job with 150 posts. In regular soil, it digs just fine, but in hard packed clay and clay/sand mix, it's not so good. The replacement cutting edges wear out on anything abrasive, so they need to be changed fairly often. Atwoods has them in stock, and after going through several sets before giving up on it. I just couldn't get it to penetrate a super hard layer of grey clay on my land that was under the red dirt. It would just spin on top of it and wear off the cutting edges.

Tractor Supply has an auger from Countryline that has a much more aggressive corkscrew tip and special cutting teeth that I think are made of something super hard. This is the most impressive auger that I've come across. It goes through the red dirt like it's nothing, and when it hits the grey stuff, it pulls the tractor down into the ground with it. I have to keep lifting the auger before it gets in too deep. Several times I had to go get my backhoe and use it to pull the auger out of the ground because it buried itself faster then I could react to how quickly it was digging.

Avoid the Speeco and go find a Countryline auger at Tractor Supply. The prices are close enough to not matter, the difference in performance is night and day!!!!

Speeco says it should work, but can't say for certain. I can't take my tractor up to where the PHD is located, so I'm going to pass on the deal. However, the Countyline one is on sale at my local feed store, so I'll probably just pick that up instead. If I could have gotten one for $200, it would be a no-brainer to get it and sell it down the road if it didn't work, but the cost of this used one isn't that cheap. Plus based on Eddie's recommendation, the Countyline might be better anyway - I have sandy clay soils, while not extremely hard, are still hard enough to concern me.

Thanks for the comments!
