I opened the well house today to check on the tank pressure and saw this spider. It's not *HUGE*, but it is the biggest I've seen in a while. Any ideas what type it is? Location is southeast VA.

There are two major types of spider.
1. Live

2. Dead

Beyond that, without extremely distinctive markings (like an hourglass on the belly) or their webs, they usually need to be type 2 to positively identify them down to species level.

In my "bag 'em and tag 'em" biology course many of the spiders required close examination of eyes, legs and reproductive parts .

SWMBO tries to ensure any spider she sees is type 2.

I have always called that type a "wolf" spider but not sure that is correct.

That's a Wolf.....I have seen some so big here & in Louisiana you could fillet them and throw 'em on the grill.

They get pretty big up north too, and they are fast.

I hate spiders like Eddy hates snakes. I hate fast ones even more.
