Friend's dad has an old 2 section (8' overall) spike tooth harrow laying in a pine thicket. What's a fair price for it? I know I'm not giving a good description but he sent me a pic that didn't show much, just rusty pipe covered in pine straw. He put a $500 tag on it but I said "no thanks". He came back and said to make an offer but I really don't know what to say.

I don't know what they are worth, maybe couple hundred:rolleyes:. I got both sections (4'x5'wide), for free from my uncle, and had old pipe laying around and some old cable that I use to drag them. If you look around lots of farmers have sections like them laying in the north 40 "boneyard" that they may part with for free. Heres mine. Good luck.

I also had a drag given to me by my in-laws. I wouldnt think I would pay much more than the price of scrap iron for a drag like that....maybe .50 per lb???....of course if I needed it badly....then it's worth more....maybe 1.00 a lb ?? It's all just iron. :D

These can be great to use to smooth tilled soil but they aren't worth very much in the way of money. $500 is way too much and $50 is too cheap.
I can buy them all day long at auctions for $85 to maybe $125 if really nice.

$500 is ridiculous for an old rusty drag harrow.

Noted above, it you're willing to drop $150 on it then that's probably all it's worth. I've seen some lying on the side on the road and on abandoned property that the county would have thanked you for loading up and taking off to save them the trouble.

How much is it worth? Or how much do they (can they) sell for?

If I needed one, I'd hate to give more than $100. Once upon a time, they hardly even drew bids at auctions. Lately, with all the food plotters, ect, prices have gone nuts on all sorts of stuff. I've seen a couple sections sell for $250+. Lots of 'em scrapped in recent years.

If you have a lot of stones on your ground I'm not sure you will want one. I have a six footer and it just drags up every rock in the area. They are good for planting certain seeds, I used one last year in a 5 acre wheat field to cover and I have a nice stand but I also have a half day of rock picking. I have the same problem with my 7 tine field cultivator, it sits in the shed because it is a rock magnet. Best equipment I have for getting the ground in shape: heavy disc and cultipacker.

There will be an auction May 28, so I'll wait to see what they have.
