Farmers across the road spilled a bunch of wheat, loading their gravity bins. But it was on my side of the road, where I cut grass. Quite a mess, so I used a sweeper with bin to collect it. Netted about six feed bags worth. It had some grass mixed in and very little gravel.

I made some inquires, trying to give it away, to someone in need. Not so easy it seems. A local showed up to pick it up, saying he will feed his chickens. But he only has SIX! The wheat will probably spoil, before they eat much of it.

So in future, what can one do to make use of this spilled wheat?

That grain will keep indefinably if it's stored in a cool dry place.

Thanks.

We have had record heat and humidity. So finding a cool dry place could be a challenge. Also, what of the grass and possibly some dirt?

Throw it out in the yard like your sewing grass, if it grows it will stay green longer than most grass and green up in the spring sooner than most grass. Worst case wildlife eats it.

One year I had a truck flip over that was carrying corn. The corn filled the road, ditch and culvert. We helped save as much as we could for the farmer but there was so much wasted. I stored about 8 wheelbarrow loads for winter time and the critters were very happy that year!

I remember driving a stretch of interstate freeway and passing about a half mile long stretch of Sunflowers growing along both sides of the road and the center median. There could only have been one cause.

Find some one with hogs

Right on! My Grand dad had a field of wheat that burned right at harvest time; he fenced the field and ran a bunch of hogs on it and recouped some of his loss.

Find some one with hogs

Some years ago, there was a wheat train derailed in eastern Washington lots and lots of wheat next to the tracks. Wheat had been thru a few years and had formed a crust around it, with perfectly good wheat inside. My BIL worked down in the basin and before coming home, would fill up grain sacks with the wheat. Raised a number of hogs on it, and the cots from a huge apricot tree. That was some of the best tasting hogs i can remember.

Around here all the wildlife - the quail, pheasants, grouse, deer, elk, turkeys, dickey birds - would really enjoy the grain. Come wheat harvest time here - all the major county roads coming up north can be scattered with grain. It can be a major concern if you ride a motorcycle.
