So I’ve got an old Kuhn disc mower which I’ve stripped right down and everything is off except this one nut that has rusted to a round head. Photo is shown below just wondered if anyone had any ideas on how to get it off? As the end of the bolt is beyond the nut I’m reluctant to try welding something onto it but I’m open to any suggestions IMG_5169.JPG

If penetrating oil and an impact wrench won't do it you could try drilling the bolt out of the nut. Of course you'd have to replace both but I think you're at that point already.

Couple ideas:
- chisel the nut off
- metal cutting blade on a oscillating tool (if narrow enough) might be able to cut through nut & bolt from the end and split the nut
- hammer a slightly smaller socket onto the nut
- can you get to the head of the bolt? Maybe chisel it off from that side or cut it off with a cutoff wheel

Heat it cherry red and bang a good tight fitting impact socket onto it?

That was my idea to try from the other side, but some bright spark who had the mower before me welded the heads of the bolts to the bottom of the cutter bar. Think my option is going to have to be either hammer an impact socket onto it or try to chisel it off

Have you seen the sockets that are made to remove rounded off bolts. Several folks make them, I think even Harbor Freight sells them. Get the one with the spiral cone shape. You take one of the sockets that fit closely and hammer it in place then using a ratchet or breaker bar while keeping pressure on the socket, loosen the nut. The youtube Project Farm has a recent video on them.

Using a good center punch get a good dimple in the top of the nut then using a good drill bit bore down thru the nut, if you can do this in 2 or 3 places then using a chisel walk it off.

Think I’m going to go down the chisel and drill it off option, because it’s recessed I don’t have good access to it to get a good hit on the chisel

I would consider going at it from the other side, i.e. grind the bolt head completely off. Then simply replace both the bolt and the nut with a new set, using some never seize on it. Some day you may actually need to take it off again.
