Hello All,
I own a JD 5100M, and am looking to buy a used material spreader for wood ash and composted manure. My property is 85 acres of open hilly Vermont land, that has been fallow for 7 years. I've looked at a variety of options, but would love to get first hand input on what works? Is a litter spreader going to do the job? If not, what am I looking for?

Thanks,
Wardo

I have a Gehl 315. I pull it with a old bigger Zetor.
It works well for both. it is a bit heavy about 5000# unloaded.
Im not sure how heavy a 5100 M is. But you need about 12,000# at least and decent traction to handle the spreader weight loaded.

Thanks for the response. The 5100M with loader probably weighs 10,000 pounds. I was wondering how a side discharge manure spreader would work with the wood ash. What sort of coverage are you getting? Are there any issues with clogging or uneven spreading?

Regards,
Ward

Side discharge gehl with the slinger hammers/flails works well to break up the ash curds. I used a lime spreader and it was not ideal, plugged up, left big chunks and my ash had already been run through a crusher.

What sort of a spread pattern are you getting?

Thanks,

Anyone use a rear discharge spreader on ash? I've heard they will work ok but I suspect a side discharge would be better. I will find out how my old NH479 does this fall anyway.

I use an old Dearborn manure spreader on my place. I've pulled it behind my Kubota M6800, my Polaris Ranger 500, and most recently behind my Toyota FJ Cruiser. When it's fully loaded its a little heavy for the Polaris, though. It works well. I load it with manure ( horse, cow, llama) and then top dress it with a few inches of woodash from my outdoor furnace. I get a span of about 20 feet. Works just fine for me.

I think you'd need something with the rear gate, our rear discharge would apply it at way too high of rate for 1:1 lime value woodash. Low quality ash with 3:1 ratio would maybe be ok?
