Looking to buy my first spreader. Will be used for lime, fertilizer and seed. I knowthere are potentials for rust with the steel hoppers. Any downside to plastic hoppers such as cracking in cool weather? Either way i plan on keeping clean and well lubricated.

Also, I am going to be spreading bermuda seed. The seed is VERY small and I am concerned that it will just pour out even at the lowest setting. Anybody have experience with fine seeds like bermuda or bahia?

Lastly, since I will be establishing new pasture can I go above the recommeded seeding rate without causing a problem? My thought is that if 30 pounds an acre is good than why not 50 to establish a thicker pasture?

New Option is now available. No Chains, No aprons, No seals, No tracks, No leading and No freezing up. This is a new ALL hydraulic dump spreader. You didn't indicate a size, this is available in a 2000 gallon or 270 cu. ft. capacity. It looks smaller than it is because there are no internal components to fill up the space. It has an industrial grade Rhino Liner inside and you control the spinners and dump with a flow control dial and adjust for hills etc with your 3 point. Works best with liquid to semi-liquid materials or smaller fines that will slide to the back of the box when lifted. It's dump motion is patented, not like a dump truck, but with a high over center pivot point that keeps the weight centered over the tires. Front-End Loaders by Westendorf: loader for tractor, shade canopy, wagons, manure & landscaping equipment.

I have a 500lb spreader and used it for the first time this spring spreading pasture seed (burmuda mix). As long as the pto isn't ingaged nothing came out of mine. I set mine to about 10 - 15 lbs per acre and it worked great. About the only complaint I'd say is that there was considerable amount of seed dust that it created and when it got to the end of what I loaded it with it looked like it might have crushed some seed. The other thing I'd suggest is getting a drag harrow to pull at the same time to get the seed "in" the ground and not just on top. I don't know how much of my seed ended up in the neighbors field because of runoff.
