Rotary Cutter Spring pin on PTO coupler yoke

Got a new to me tractor and brush hog. The locking spring loaded pin on the couple that slides onto the PTO shaft was jammed. I had to drill the top of the pin and drive a screw into into and whack the yoke while holding the screw in the pin. Got it pulled out and spins freely. There was a part of the spring wedge between the pin and wall of the hole.

Well now I have a pin that is no longer spring loaded. Is there a way to get this pin out? Seems like there has to be some sort of keeper or magic button to pull-push-spin etc. to get that sucker out and a new pin + spring inserted

I think there is a pin, that keeps the spring loaded shaft retention pin in the coupler.

I think the small pin you can see on the external shot, can be driven through and will fall out the little hole inside the coupler. Once that is driven through the spring loaded pin will come out. I can then insert a spring and new pin into the big slot, and replace the smaller pin from the outside to keep it in place. My brain put all of this together late last night. Headed out of town tonight for a couple of days. I will give it a whirl later in the week.

As a short term fix I think I can just use a bolt through the couple and PTO stub as a means to keep the couple on the PTO stub on the tractor.

Haven't done it myself but logic suggests that little hole you see in the spline would have a roll pin in it. TS has a couple of different repair options.

Can't tell from your pictures, but some of those pins are held in by stacking the hole on the spring end. This keeps the washer under the spring from popping out. Grind/drill or force pin out that side. When you get the new pin kit, stake it back in.

use a pin and drive the remains out the larger side. TSC or the like will have the parts to repair the yoke. A bolt will work if you get a nut with a nylon insert it will work better. Some of my yokes have two pins on opposite sides of the yoke. Three hands are helpful for removing and installing this PTO.

I had a sixties era brush hog with a wallowed out spring pin assembly when I bought it used. It was so sloppy I just used a well greased bolt and nut on it for decades until I finally replaced the housing when I replaced the u joints. The bolt set up worked well and really wasn't all that inconvenient as you might think.

Well I drove that pin out, and it was the keeper for the retaining bolt. I pulled it out and some rusted all-to-heck spring fragments. Ordered a repair kit, but the pin wasn't correct, but I was able to use the spring. We are up and running just as it should be. Just needs a shield and we are good to go
