The rubarb is coming in very well this year.
We don't grow a lot, just a row of about a dozen good hills.
I love sauce, and like to have it as a cold beverage on a hot day.
Rubarb sauce with cottage cheese is a favorite also.
My wife makes the best crisp as well. Desert with ice cream.
It's the first real "garden vegetable" that comes in, I'm glad I like it. some don't.

OH! And it's GOOD FOR YOU! Vit. K, calcium, and potassium. just don't eat the leaves, oxalic acid or some such. Cooking fixes that.
But I'll still pull a stem and just start munching, screwing up my face in all the sourness! ;-)

Grandmother grew & made rhubarb pie. One day when I was a kid one pie she made some rhubarb spilled into drip pan and we pulled it making taffy.
I miss those home made pies she made.
Funny story in grade school, I was about 9 we were having a bake sale, so she made green and pink peppermint and wintergreen candy.
She used a soda bottle cap...but hard to remove rolled out candy from cap, so I said I'd be right back.... In the garage I drilled a hole in center of two caps. Ground point off two roofing nails putting a spring on each with a clip. Then it was easy, press & push.
And yes I washed them before using.
We made a few hundred & they sold out quickly at school.

I wish it grew down here. Some grow it as an annual I guess.

Mom was some that were started from rhizomes from her mom's garden. We had some of that growing when we lived in WI.

I like it many ways. Not as big a fan of blending it with strawberry. Both are better on their own, imho.

Agree! Strawberries should be served separately. Mixed fruit pies are always less than whole fruit. Not that rhubarb could be called a fruit ;-)

I always loved rhubarb fresh from the garden also. My Mom always had a huge patch of it growing and I loved to snag some and eat it raw. Years ago I was visiting my parents and of course grabbed some rhubard and was eating away. My little niece noticed and wanted a piece also so I broke off a chunk and handed it to her. "Screwing up a face in all the sourness" pretty much says it all:

For the kids, a dipping cup of granulated sugar goes over well.
I recall using the sugar in "Pixi Stix" to blunt the edge of a rhubarb sword.

We also had two persimmon trees where I grew up. If you waited until the day they were ripe and fell off tree they were great, otherwise they'd turn your mouth inside out.
Today a neighbor called, their cherry trees are ready to pick. If you wait another couple days birds will strip trees bare. They're excellent but very tart. My wife makes a mean cherry cobbler. Served warm with either vanilla ice cream scoop or heavy whipping cream.
Another neighbor has raspberries, also a great cobbler.
We have blackberries.

We had a persimmon tree when we lived in Goleta Calif.

I had never known persimmons, but had heard of the word parsimonious.

I looked up "persimmon" in the dictionary.
There I read, "A tree, who's fruit can be eaten ONLY when completely ripe".

So true! But are they ever good when they are ripe! Jello in it's own wrapper!

We are fortunate, Here we grow peaches, plums, apricots, sour cherries pears, blue berries and raspberries. Strawberries too, both wild and cultivated. Plus we get wild black raspberries!
The asparagus with tonight's supper was tasty!

I really should get an apple tree, they grow well, but you need two for pollination, and I just don't have the sunshine space, Plus, there are multiple apple orchards less than 2 miles from our place.

eta

To keep on topic ;-)
We had rhubarb crisp with coconut vanilla ice cream for after supper desert tonight. NOT BAD!
