Staining My New Barn

100% agree with Mike. Our old Cedar house we had used several different Oil based stains over the years. The last time we used Cabots and it has held up well. i don't live there anymore but go past that house occasionally after 9 or 10 years still looks good to me. That being said I hear formula's change based on the business economies. Back 25 years ago I used to think Olympic was a pretty good stain (original stain on that old house) 7 or 8 years later I recoated with Olympic and it did not hold up well at all. Then I read something that the company had been sold and the formula had been changed. Wouldn't expect any issue with Cabot but who knows today!

Nice barn! Will you be using it for your tractor and animals?

The barn will mainly be used for storage... tractor, tools, stuff from our current attic will be moved there, pinball machines!!, and building materials when we build the retirement log home in a few years!!!

Going up tomorrow to start cleaning it before staining and insulating it!

Thanks for taking time to respond!

we just painted our barn. Only got 3.5 sides done so far and im up to 20 gallons. Our barn was built in 1950-51. It just soaked up the paint. One thing i much say is invest in a airless sprayer. WORTH EVERY PENNY IMO. took 2.5hrs to paint the barn(its 42`x40` and 22` at the peak.)

Do you recommend a specific brand? I would like a sprayer that can stain and paint if possible. But most importantly paint. Thanks

It appears from all of the comments that staining gets the best reviews for your barn. In a similar vein I am in the final stages of finishing a barn for my loader and lawn tractors and have to make a decision whether to use a stain or paint. The barn is completely shingled with eastern white cedar shingles. I am leaning toward staining but would like to have your comments. I would like to replicate the type of coloring achieved in some the houses in Nantucket. Any suggestions?

I am trying to make a decision about staining or painting fence posts. I talked with a guy at the paint store and said I could do either. He said it was easier to paint after staining if you don't like the stain but going the other way would be difficult. I am opting for stain. Also I don't have to prime then also.
