Way back "in the day" late 50's I think my uncle had a hay crimper that he pulled behind the sickle mower. Anybody remember those or is this just a figment of my imagination?

I know several guys around here that still use them.

So yes they did/do exist.

I believe the ones a have seen are John Deere.

Mine was a New Idea crimper having a fluted steel roll and a second roll with tire carcass rings on it. It was pulled by the sickle bar mower and powered by a pass thru 540 pto shaft. It crimped the hay from a the previous round, not the hay just cut.

NEw Holland sold one, so did Massey Ferguson, Ford, John Deere, IH, New Idea, Oliver, MM, Allis Chalmers, and a few others.

Yep, my MF41 sicklebar has that option.

What are the benefits of crimping ?

I think conditioning (crimping) is more important in the Midwest and South where high humidity slows drying and there's always the threat of rain soaking the hay cutting.

Here in the North Sac Valley nobody conditions since the humidity is so low nearly all the time that the hay dries fast without that procedure.

In Holland, PZ sold front mounted drum mowers without crimper for summerfeeding at the stable. (you dont want to crimp fresh fed grass because when heaped in front of the feeding gate, crimped grass goes foul in half the time) When used for winter forage, one would hook up the TK 212 crimper in the rear 3pt to crimp while cutting.
Rear mowers usually had exactly the same crimper built into the rear of the mower.

This place here still sells a stand alone crimping system, they call is a macerator. It has 2 sets of crimping rollers, 1 rubber and 1 steel. They claim it can cut drying down over any other conditioning method.
