I have a MF 1017 backhoe, but want to be able to run the back hoe with a stand alone engine.

The pump is a Cross 50 series the MF 1017 manual says max pump flow is 5.56 gpm @ 540 rpm

I was wondering if a 9hp 6:1 gear reduction motor will have enough power to run the pump to run the backhoe?

The torque of the 9hp motor is 13.5 ftlb at 2500 rpm so if I run this motor at 3240 rpm with 6 to 1 reduction that will be 540 and 81 ftlb of torque?

What is the typical PTO toque out of a MF 1030 tractor?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Derek

Derek,

I think you would be short on the 9 hp. You might google "Dig-it" which is a "Towable Mini-Trencher that was made not far from here. They made a small back hoe that was towable. I "think" it had about 15+ hp and 6 or so gpm. I use a Prince 10 gpm on my PTO and run at half throttle for my 20" bucket 3PH back hoe. It is plenty fast. At 2500/540 I have narrowed the swing cylinder output orifice to slow it down. Easiest is just to run at 1400 rpm. It will rip any stump out of the ground even at that rpm.

Why not use your MF pto? Your pto H.P. is just over 20 I think. That can be found by googling and you can check more than one web site to be sure.

I don't have a tractor, just a skid steer so I am trying to turn this into a towable backhoe,
I talked with Cross today and they say at 6 gpm at 2000 psi at 540 rpm 10hp is what is calculated to run that pump.
so I think with a 9hp 6 to 1 gear reduction motor with the increased torque, I think it will drive the backhoe fine.

Any thoughts?

Derek,

I now see the Skid Loader that you want as the basis for your Back Hoe. The back hoe would replace the bucket I presume so L-R swing is provided by the Back Hoe not swing cylinder? (Obviously no Hoe stabilizers) Take a look at this URL

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/build-yourself/160511-caddigger-628-build.html He is using a 12" bucket towed BH and a Honda GC 160 and a 2 gpm pump. Obviously not a Skidder mount but some very good info in there. Hopefully this will provide some reading that will help you decide. This guy is using HALF the HP and Flow you have.

Why not just tap into the hydraulics of the skid steer?
