I was just browsing DanTheFamilyMan's post about the Y385 in his pickup truck and noticed the RPM he was running it at. My question is what is the standard max RPM for a 380 engine? I never adjusted mine and it max's out at 2500 rpm. I've heard metion of 2300 and have seen it rated on the YangDong website for a 1 hour run at 3000 rpm. The reason I ask is to get the 540 rpm at the pto shaft. I realize a couple hundred rpm on the engine effects the pto very little, but what rpm is shown for the green zone on the 1 piece instrument panel? I'm using a Tiny Tach for monitoring. I'm just curious. Thanks guys.

The most I have been able to get on mine is 2300. This with the external governor limit completely removed and no limit on the linkage. The green band is centered on 2250. I don't know how accurate the stock tach is. I call full throttle close enough for the PTO.

The green band is in fact the PTO rpm range for the tractor in which it's installed. Different tractors will have different "green zones". If/when you use PTO driven equipment, simply adjust the throttle so the tach is in the green band. Then move the speed select lever to the desired speed - usually 540.

The Y380 that turns 3000 rpm is not a T (tractor) variant. I don't remember them all, but I think there's a S (stationary), a M (marine) and a few others. The 3000 rpm variant is for some other application, possibly a generator. The higher the rpm rating, the lower the life expectancy.

Thank you, Greg, for pointing out I failed to say I have the 380 also.

Thanks Harold. That's what I was wondering, about the "green" zone rpm. Since I'm using a TinyTach and don't have a green zone indicator when I use a 540 rpm rated implement I'll run her at 2250-2300 rpm.

When I was doing research on the Yangdong Y385 they stated the rated RPM at 3000. I believe on the Y385T the 'T' must stand for 'tractor' and I think that it refers to the heavy flywheel set up for the two stage clutch. When I machined the 'T' flywheel I noticed that most of the weight of the flywheel is far ahead of the crankshaft mounting surface, putting it away from the last crankshaft bearing. This and the fact the evidently the Yangdong machining tolerance is not very tight (my flywheel was off-center .0015) makes me think that that is the reason the RPM's on the 'T' type engine being less than the standard engine. After having machined a Y385T flywheel I do not think it to be a good idea to run the engine past 2300 rpm. (I am running at 2650 RPM, but keep in mind that my flywheel is 13 lbs lighter and almost all of the weight came off the 'far' side (away from the crank bearing) and is highly balanced and machined to tighter tolerances.

Thanks,
-Dan-

Rick, mine is the 385 motor but came set from the factory where it won't exceed 2300 rpm. That is also my PTO setting. I run it full throttle when I run the finish mower and usually 1500-2000 RPM the rest of the time.
