Hi all...
Mounted the new starter but when i turn the key i get a loud noiuse as if the starte gear is not properly engaging th flywheel. There's only 2 bolts and there's not a lot of play so i don't see any way to adjust the starter position.

I took the starter off and remounted it and same thing.

I am guessing either the gears are not compatable, or i need to sync the two . Is there something i need to do??? i could try spinning the flywheel a little, but i don't want to keep messing with it if i don't know what i am doing. * sigh*

Thanks again!

Really stupid question here but
you're certain it's the right starter?

If you've got the correct starter count the teeth on the gear on the old starter and on the new one. They should be the same. You could also try comparing shaft length and gear position between the two.

comparing the two is on my agenda for today. counting teeth is a good idea. Likely i will just send it back and order one for someplace else. I don't remember having this issue that last time i replaced it 2 years ago...

Masseyrider poses a good question. I would expect to replace the starter after twenty years but not two. I suspect other issues if the starter is failing that soon.

If that was me, I would have had the original starter rebuilt instead. Lots of rebuilders out there and most auto shops can get the original one rebuilt as well.

You didn't per chance buy the replacement one on Amazon did you?
I know you are not talking to me but I have never got a bad anything from Amazon.

I directed that comment to the OP. Neither have I actually gotten anything bad from Amazon but that is most likely because I like to refrain from buying Chinese products unless there is no other choice. Having said that, there are actually some products on there that aren't made offshore but not that many.

Ford 3000. Look to see if you have broken teeth on the fly wheel ring. I had my starter rebuilt and it still didn't work. Found teeth missing for a distance of about 5 inches. A couple times I turned the engine enough to get it started so I could brush hog. I had to split the tractor in 1/2 to get to the flywheel to replace the ring. It took 3 guys, 3 jacks and an engine hoist to stab it back together.

Ok, sorry had company so i couldn't get back to the tractor.
I took the starter off and remounted. Tried it and it grinded. Tried again and it started. NOw every other try either startes or grinds.
Going to remover it and count teeth. Also will look the flywheeel over.

Teeth look the same... 13 0n both the. old and new. Tooth height width all look to be the same.
The only difference i can find is that it looks like the new one might be moving 1/16 an in. further out than the old one but i cant see how that would make a difference?

I had a kubota that would grind the starter at a specific part on the ring gear. The teeth where worn bad in just that one spot.

Have you checked the flywheel teeth?

Flywheel teeth all look consistent. There is a bevel on on edge, i assume to let the starter gear mesh... none look broken.

OK... chatted with a massey dealer and he confirmed all 3 wires the same type connecter go to the same terminal. He's thinking the starter is bad, so i will send it back. Maybe i will mount it one more time and try, but you know they say the definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over hoping for different results....;)
Thanks everyone for trying to help!

does it grind/make weird noises when you bench test it?
