The selenoid on my 1900 is is just clicking. If I jump the 2 big terminals the starter spins. The selenoid from Ford is $290. Does any one have another sorce. Can you take these apart and clean the contacts like you could on the older Ac Delco selenoids.

Bill,

I have repaired a few solenoid but none for a starter. The concept is the same. if the coil is not damaged then there is not much could go wrong with the plunger itself. I had issues with derbies that limited the travel of plunger, contact being rusty and thing in that nature. For sure you can open it up and put it back the same way you found it at the very least. You have a pivot point and arm that might have come off. I look at the pivot point closely, it might need to be cleaned and greased well.

JC,

Hmmm. is your battery good? did you try to jump?

Today I started to remove the selonoid and when I went to remove the nut for the positive cable I found that the stud was loose. The outer nut was tight. I removed the outer nut and cables and tightened the inner nut and put it back together. It seens to work fine now. BTW I found complete starters on ebay for a little more than the selonoid.

I got here a little late for this party, since you have fixed it, but I did go down the road with the bad solenoid thing. The one on my 1500 would not come apart. Well....yes I could have gotten it apart, but would likely have broken the case in doing so. Mine had a fried stud where the cable had been loose and burned it up and I could not remove the stud. I discovered they wanted like $272 for one too and what I have to say is that I found one for around $50 off e-bay. You will have to go to longer mounting bolts, but it fits just right and takes care of the problem.
