Starter solenoid troubleshooting

... Often, there is a high volume starter that matches your bolt pattern, direction of rotation, and # of teeth for less money, and perhaps better performance.
At least for the early YM's, Yanmar used the same alternator and regulator as '72 Datsun (Nissan) without AC. Nipon Denso as I recall. Still stocked at Autozone because of such broad application for that and I assume others. Inexpensive, I bought both for under $50. Plus there's a rebuild kit that the pros use with even broader application.

I expect the same thing applies to starters, what you need is out there but listed for something unrelated and it would take research. I found the application lists in Ebay offerings to be the most extensive.

Don't Do This! My charging system worked like new until I pressure washed under the (old, mechanical relays) regulator to get out the packed in mud-dauber nest. I assumed it was a sealed unit. Nope. There are big wire-wound resistors under there, and air vents up into the internals. Next time I ran it, the regulator then the alternator let out all their smoke. At least the modern replacement regulator is solid state and potted.

Just an update on my plight. I had my starter rebuilt for about a $100 – money well spent in my minds eye . Won’t be able to install for a week or so but if the problem still exists it clearly is wiring and I will tackle that then. Wanted to share some info I came across that might be helpful in the future for the others

YM 2020D tractor

Engine 3T82B

Original Starter is believed to be a Hitachi S12-77A

Possible Replacements:

ISI Starters – these are who makes the starters for Hoye and from what my starter rebuilder said they are the best you can buy at this time.. IMI part number for the Hitachi above is 214-005 and is a 2.0KW. IMI sells them for $325 plus $15 for shipping.

Rare Electrical 2.0kw was what I put on the YM240 in 2004. It still works like new. I think the quality is the same as NAPA replica parts.
