How to replace a starter on a GC2310. The starter did not released this morning and it made a noise an smoke from ir really bad. I am sure by the sound of it there were some teeth stripping. I let it cool for 20 minute, noting. Do I need to do a oil change in case of metal in the oil. It it hard to replaced?

The biggest problem with changing the starter on this new stuff is ample room to work. They got everything, parts and what not, so tight and in close proximity that something that should be simple turns into a pain in the @@@. If you stripped some teeth, it is in the bell housing/fly wheel area and should not affect the engine oil. However, if you stripped teeth of the flywheel that could be a bigger issue. You generally have to split the tractor to get to the flywheel. The silver lining is and picking the lesser of 2 evils, if you had a run away starter it will make all kinds of noise and the fly wheel will be ok. To change the starter, and i'm not that familiar with that particular model, but i say your going to probably have 2 or 3 metric bolts holding the starter on and then the wires going to the solenoid. Sounds simple and i guess thats why they call them sub compacts, but the engineers probably did not give you a whole lot of room to work. Hope this helps and good luck with it.

The flywheel is at the front of the machine. You may have to remove a shroud from around it before you get to work. It's been a while since I've done a mf gc starter. Don't forget to take the ground cable loose. I'll look at a similar one (gc1700) tomorrow and report back with some further details.

Wow, that is a switch. Cant say i have run into a situation where the fly wheel is in the front. Im going to take a close look at my mf, i think i learned something.

Yeah, it's a subcompact. The engine is backwards so it doesn't blow hot air on the operator.

Sorry you are having trouble.

GC starters are not failing.

I am not aware of any posts about replacing one.

Please inform us what you find.

Even i will agree that mf starters seem to be pretty decent. I have not had any trouble nor have i heard of any mf starters.

Doesn't look like it would be too hard to replace. Although it's called the left side of the engine --yep, engine is mounted backward-- the starter is on the right side of the tractor, just ahead of the oil dipstick and under the exhaust pipe coming from the muffler. (Looks like a good start would be to remove the muffler.)

Looks like a flex head gear wrench will get those two bolts out without removing the exhaust. I may be mistaken because I looked on a newer model.
