Hello, I have several questions maybe some one could help me with. , I’ve own several diesel tractors where you have to hold switch for glow plugs to heat up on the first start of the day. My question is, on the work-master is it the same way or do you need to do it every start? Curious because the glow plug light comes on on every start. 2nd question, the key switch has a position to turn back and hold for glow plugs, but It also has a position forward where the pump clicks and you then turn all the way to start when glow plug light goes away. Which is best?

If the engine temp is over 70 degrees F, then you shouldn’t really need to use the glow plugs at all.
It really depends on the model, but if it doesn’t start when you crank it, run the glow plugs longer.
My tractor, above 50f, I just turn the key to the crank position and it starts right up.
30-50f, it needs about 5 seconds of glow plug. For every 10 degrees less than 30f, I add another 3-5 seconds.

Best practice is to let the glow plugs warm the cylinders before starting, at any temp. Just wait the few seconds for that light to turn off before cranking it.

As for the key, you should be able to simply turn it to the ON position, then over to start. Turning it back is for cold temps, to get the cylinders a bit warmer before attempting to crank. You dont want a cold start.

Thank you!

The glow plugs don't warm the cylinders, they just heat up their own tiny coil, more like a big light bulb filament. The point is to get the fuel air mixture to ignite right where it's in contact with that tiny coil, so the flame front then propagates through the mixture.

The cylinders, pistons, valves, and whatever else will be cold when the combustion starts and the engine first begins turning. The only way to have a warm start is to do it shortly after you had been previously running.

Did your tractor come with an operators manual? If the answer is yes I advise that you read it because all the operator manuals that I've read contain a lot of very valuable information. I'll bet it probably contains correct engine starting procedure for your particular model of tractor. Glow plugs on my Kubota M7040 are controlled by a sensor that detects ambient temperature & aren't activated unless outside temperature qualifies for GP activation.

I realized this is wrong. You can use various things to warm the engine before starting, either built in or sitting on the ground pointed at it. Just, not the glow plugs.
