Ever been in a hot springs pool when it was -30C?

You got icicles on your hair and the rest of you is deliciously warm under the water and if it's a clear night stars in the sky are just awsome.
With no related experience, I can't imagine that. It sounds beautiful, but still ....

What I picture is that when you you climbed out you would instantly freeze like the tossed water in slofr8's photo.

The Pool entrance/exit is so designed that one can stay in the water till after one passes through/under pexiglass swinging doors. Then one is in a heated building with showers to remove ice!:thumbsup:

Terrific way to end a Back country ski trip or a day on the hill.:D:D

It used to be Hot Mineral Spring Water. Now it's Town water.:)

Oh you'd have a few minutes to get indoors if it was still. A 30 mph wind would give you frost bite right quick though!
I've done the sauna to snow angel thing and its amazing how quick you can go from very hot and melting snow to really cold and feel like your lieing in razor blades!

Gordon,

We have a TD8E, with ether injection. Since new it was never hooked up to a canister, however, it has always been started (since 1986) with starting fluid in cold temps (below 50 degrees). A quick spray (barely enough to wet the intake screen) and she is purring.

Also, we start at about half throttle and idle it down as soon as its running smoothly.

My 231s Massey has a Therostart setup. I open the throttle 1/3rd and turn the key til I feel resistance then do a slow count to 20. Turn the key the rest of the way and off she goes. I guess the coldest I've ever started it was in the upper teens. One thing is for sure you've got to have a strong battery. About every three or four years I replace it with the best Diehard they make.
If we get a substantial snowfall the only way out of our 1/4 mile driveway is with the a blower on this machine. Even my big pu has gotten stuck.

Very true. I made a sauna last year and used it quite often last winter. It's cool to see the steam rolling off of us walking back to the house in sub zero temps.
Wind is a buzz kill tho.

You betcha; Banff it is.

Many a day spent in the back country near their. It was a really nice spot to soak after comming out in from a four day trip. It was a good thing one has to shower before going in or we'd never have been let near the place.:D:D

Thanks for the starting ideas. I have had some time to experiment with different procedures using them. It has been in the twenties and high teens this last week. Now I have some confidence that it will start and that helps alot. What I have found to be the best method so far for my particular engine is to crank for a while before turning on the run/fuel switch. Then set the throttle at full, as the manual says, turn on the run/fuel switch and crank for about 15 seconds. That usually has started it. And it never takes more than two tries now. I get lots of white smoke when it is cranking.

When it starts I have plenty of time to move the throttle down before the engine gets to high idle RPM. There is no racing at high RPM at all. It takes several seconds for the RPM to build up and it increases slow enough that moving the throttle down is no problem. If I try to start at a lower throttle setting it won't catch. But as soon as I move to full throttle off she goes.

Thanks for all the info it really helps.
