starting a mulching business

   / starting a mulching business #11
I am currently looking into starting a mulching business and would like to know how some of you got started and if there are any grants or help out there to get you up and going because as you know the equiptment is not cheap.

I hate to bust your bubble but you better have something else going for you if your going to start a Mulching Business. It's not wat its cracked up to be sittin in a small cab for 8-10 hours a day, burning $100.00 to $120.00 fuel a day an that is now when fuel is cheaper than is past summer. Keepin your machine clean before you have a fire. I spent 4 hours yesterday cleaning my machine. tryin to get people to understand why we have to charge so much 150 an hour people don't like to hear that they turn an run. New teeth on your head it depends on wat you run anywhere from $1000 for chipper teeth to $3500+ for carbides. Your note on machine, just think bout it before you jump in it, like i said before better have someting else on the side.

Alot of these mulching guys got started during the housing boom. Money is tight, I would not spent 100k plus right now. During the housing boom residents had money to burn. People are lucky to even pay the notes today. But if you do decide to start, you will have plenty of people trying to underbid you because they are trying to make next months payment. My stuff is all payed for and I won't move a inch unless the job will make it worth my while(time,fuel,insurance,depreciation,lunch,etc.). Welcome to the business.

I must disagree with the others, starting a sucessful business is about you and not anything else. Now is an awesome time to pick up some good equipment, the SBA is very aggresively marketing for new "green" businesses to finance and the country is not bankrupt (yet). Eeveryone still wants a nice place to live and many people have decided to spruce up the current homeplace rather than hunt for a new one. Just be smart and honest, work hard and keep your debt low and you can make it, maybe not in spankin new equipment and trucks but they still can get the job done.

Cb is right, you can find equipment pretty cheap considering wat they were selling for a year ago. I'm actuly lookin to upgrade to a purpose built mulching machine, my advice to you would be to let folks know wat you plan on doing, get some job on the line an if you think you can do it, Than set your mind to it, work hard at it an you will be succesful. When i started i did a lot of work for close freinds an family then word of mouth. If you do decide to start your business get a good machine, it sucks having to fight with your equiment day ina day out.
